The physical oceanography of the Gulf of Maine and adjacent waters in January 1968 and January - February 1969 is described. Temperature, salinity, and density data are presented in surface contours and profiles. Dissolved oxygen and chlorophyll data are presented in section profiles. Climatic conditions of the region were reflected in the temperature and salinity of the surface waters. Intrusion of Gulf Stream waters into the Gulf of Maine is inferred from T-S relations and disolved oxygen data.

This report provides the Naval Research Laboratory with oceanographic environmental data to support an acoustical experiment in the Gulf of Maine/Georges Bank region. Discussed is marine climatology, surface waves, water masses, circulation, and ship traffic density. Using these environmental data as guides, it is recommended that the most satisfactory exercise are would be north of Georges Bank, i.e., in the Gulf of Maine north of 42 degrees N and west of 67 degrees W.
