The scope of this paper is to recall fundamental notions of the molecular spectroscopy and dynamics, necessary for discussion of photophysical and photochemical processes in condensed phases. We will thus treat in a more detailed way the specific features which are important for molecular systems strongly interacting with their environment. Other aspects such as the time evolution of isolated molecules, single-level excitation and state-to-state chemistry, important for the gas-phase photophysics are omitted. We start (Sec.2) with a brief description of radiative processes (light absorption and emission) in molecules. In the quantum-mechanical treatment of this problem, the appropriate basis is that of so-called zero-order states, corresponding to the traditional scheme of electronic states (singlets, doublets, triplets etc.) and vibrational levels belonging to each state. The important point will be deduction of selection rules for most radiative transitions. At this stage all molecular states are considered as stationary states. In order to treat the breakdown of simple selection rules and non-radiative transitions between individual molecular states, it is necessary to take into account the mechanisms coupling the zero-order states (Sec.3). We will first focus on intramolecular coupling effects and then discuss the solvent effects on intramolecular relaxation processes. The problem of the non-radiative transfer of the electronic energy between different molecules - closely related to that of the energy dissipation within a single molecule will be treated in Sec.4.

Photochemistry and Photophysics of Coordination Compounds: Fundamentals and Applications provides a systematic overview of the photochemical and photophysical properties of coordination compounds with different metal cores. Beginning with a clear introduction to the fundamentals of both photochemistry and coordination chemistry, the book goes on to outline the photochemical and photophysical properties of a large range of coordination compounds, clustering metal cores together in chapters according to their period table group, ranging across Transition metals, Lanthanides and Actinides. In addition to outlining their properties, each chapter discusses the synthesis, current applications and future potential of coordination compounds in each group. Drawing on the experience of a global team of experts, this book is an authoritative guide for all those interested in understanding and harnessing the photochemical properties and potential applications of coordination complexes for their own work. Introduces the fundamentals of both photochemistry and coordination compounds Supports learning through carefully structured content, with chapters uniquely arranged by period table group Bridges the knowledge gap between theory and practice by presenting application examples in each chapter

Focusing on complex naturally-occurring and synthetic supramolecular arrays, this work describes the mechanism by which transition metal complexes bind to DNA and how the DNA scaffold modifies the photochemical and photophysical properties to bound complexes. It includes details of photoinduced electron transfer between intercalated molecules, and examines thermally and photochemically induced electron transfer in supramolecular assemblies consisting of inorganic molecular building blocks.

Transition metal and rare earth compounds are investigated intensively because of important questions concerning fundamental research problems. More recently also their enormous potential for the development of new materials for photophysical and photochemical applications has been explored. Thus, it is important to focus on a deeper understanding of the elctronic energies, transition prohabilities, intermolecular interactions, etc.. This task has been accomplished by leading researchers in the field. They present introductions into, but also detailed reviews of the current state of knowledge of three different subjects.

Drawing on the continued wealth of photochemical research, this volume combines reviews on the latest advances in the field with specific topical highlights. Starting with periodical reports of the recent literature on physical and inorganic aspects, light induced reactions in cryogenic matrices, properties of transition-metal compounds, time-resolved spectroscopy, the exploitation of solar energy and the molecules of colour. Coverage continues with highlighted topics, in the second part, from photoresponsive hydrogels, the tunable photoredox properties of organic dyes, light-driven asymmetric organocatalytic processes, dual gold–photoredox catalysis, the preparation and characterization of photosensitizers for triplet–triplet annihilation photon upconversion and the role of photochemistry on traditional synthetic processes. This volume will include for the first time a section entitled ‘SPR Lectures on Photochemistry’, providing examples for academic readers to introduce a photochemistry topic and precious help for students in photochemistry. Providing critical analysis of the topics, this book is essential reading for anyone wanting to keep up to date with the literature on photochemistry and its applications.
