Excerpt from Photo-Chemistry There has resulted a delay, not without danger, in the attainment of independent status by photo-chemistry, having been for so long ancillary to her elder sisters, thermo and electro-chemistry, so that only by a masquerade, momentous both for theory and practice, as the science of radio-activity has this Cinderella of the sciences been accorded its due recognition. Excerpt from A Manual of Photographic Chemistry: Theoretical and Practical A middle course between these extremes is perhaps the best to adopt; that is, to make selection of certain funda mental points, and to explain them with some minuteness, leaving others of less importance to be dealt with in a more summary manner, or to be altogether omitted. Excerpt from A Manual of Photographic Chemistry: Including the Practice of the Collodion Process The Author has endeavoured to keep pace with the improvements which are daily being introduced in the science and art of Photography. In the present Edition alterations have been made in the style and general arrangement of tho work, and additional matter has been inserted. Since the publication of the Third Edition, a series of experiments have been made on tho manufacture of Collodion, the results of which have thrown further light upon the conditions affecting the sensitiveness of the excited film, and have enabled the writer to introduce an organic substance, "Glycyrrhizine," which will be found of service in making Photographic copies of Engravings and similar works of Art. Dr. Norris, of Birmingham, has within the last few months communicated a paper on dry Collodion, which places the theory of that subject upon a better footing than before. The Oxymel preservative process is now also thoroughly understood, and may be considered certain. In addition to tho above, the "Albuminized Collodion" of M. Taupenot, which experience proves to be one of the best dry processes at present known, is included in this addition. Excerpt from The Chemistry of Light and Photography Among the splendid scientific inventions of this century, two are specially prominent - Photography and Spectrum Analysis. Both belong to the province of Optics, and at the same time of Chemistry. While Spectrum Analysis has, down to the present time, remained almost exclusively in the hands of the learned, Photography passed immediately into practical life, spread over almost every branch of human effort and knowledge, and now there is scarcely a single field in the universe of visible phenomena where its productive. Excerpt from A Manual of Photography: Founded on Hardwich's Photographic Chemistry Ir will be necessary to make a few remarks by way of Preface to this edition of Mr. Hardwich's treatise on Photography. The short compendium of general Chemistry has been omitted, because this Science can be better studied from the more comprehensive works on that subject which now abound. Indeed, a know ledge of Chemistry is not essential to the practical Photographer, for it is only on very exceptional occasions that he will be called on to prepare any of his own Chemicals. At the same time it is deemed desirable to give a Vocabulary, mentioning the nature and properties of the various substances used in Photo graphy, except when these are described in the body of the work. Carried in wallets and displayed in homes, photographs are a common, but often an overlooked feature of modern life. And, with the advent of digital technology many believe that the so called 'wet chemistry' behind old fashioned photography is a thing of the past - but is it? The Chemistry of Photography endeavours to unravel the mysteries of picture taking and reflects on the diversity and complexity of the science. It gives readers an insight into the chemistry needed to generate pictures, spanning all mediums including still and motion picture as well as digital imaging. Beginning with the components of conventional photography such as films and papers, the book also looks at light capture and amplification, negative films, processing solutions, colour transparencies, the chemistry of colour and motion picture films. The book concludes with a discussion of digital technology and new innovations in photography. This fascinating book will appeal to scientists and those with a general interest in both the new and the old science behind photography.
