Excerpt from In Old Pennsylvania Towns So many citizens of old Pennsylvania towns have aided the writer in her researches that their names would fill many pages; she wishes, however, to make particular mention of the aid given her by such historians of Lancaster as Miss Martha Bladen Clark and the Honorable C.I. Landis; by Mr. Henry W.Shoemaker, that indefatigable Pennsylvania chronicler; by Dr. Thomas Lynch Montgomery, State Librarian at Harrisburg; by Judge and Mrs. Edward W.Biddle and Miss Emmeline K.Parker, of Carlisle; by the Honorable John Stewart, of Chambersburg, and Mr. George H.Stewart, of Shippensburg; by Miss Anna Valentine and Mrs. Harry Valentine, of Beliefonte; by George R.Bedford, Esq., and Mr. Christopher Wren, of Wilkes-Barre; by Baird Halberstadt, Esq., of Pottsville; by Mr. Oliver Ormsby Page and Mr. Sumner B. Ely, of Pittsburgh; by Miss Louise de Schweinitz, of Bethlehem; by General H. C. Trexler and Mr. Charles R.Roberts, of Allentown; by Mr. John P.Lyons, of Montrose, and last, but by no means least, by Governor William C.Sproul, of Lapidea, near Chester. Excerpt from The Changing of Historic Place Names: With an Introduction and Glossary of Some Historic Names Changed or Misspelled in Pennsylvania The author wishes to state that this brief monograph is written at the suggestion of Col. Henry W. Shoemaker, who has not only assisted in the writing, but who also has kindly paid the expense of publication. iMie article could be extended very greatly. The author thinks, however, that enough is written to call attention to the evil of changing place names. Introduction It is indeed a privilege, through the agency of tlie Pennsylvania Alpine Club, to assist in the publication of so timely a monograph as that of Dr. Donehoo s, on the subject of changing historic place names. Every month the senseless shifting is going on, newcomers wresting from the historic past the heritage of honored names. It will be difficult a century hence to follow the course of history in Pennsylvania; even now it is hard to identify the places visited by early travelers like Spangenberg, Ettwein and Col. Weiser, as innovators have changed and re-changed even the names of the streams and mountains that they crossed. It will be hard to trace the racial and philological development of the State as the haphazard system of renaming places destroys all historic sequence of nationality and individual tendencies. One bright spot remains. Pennsylvania has discarded fewer of her Indian names than most other States; personal vanity or prejudice was hardly strong enough to obliterate these for even more than "their names are on the waters and you cannot blot them out," the Indian-named mountains, valleys, lakes, rivers and streams persist and bid fair to defy the ruthlessness of the ages. Let the constant watchfulness of every public-spirited Pennsylvanian be directed to "save the ancient landmarks" and keep inviolate the sturdy, distinctive nomenclature and spelling handed down by our forefathers. Excerpt from Pennsylvania Boroughs The charter from Charles II. granting William Penn a princely domain to the west of the Delaware river, gave him the authority to "divide the country into Townes, Hundreds, and Counties, and to erect and incorporate Townes into Borroughes, and Borroughes into Citties, and to make and constitute ffaires and markets therein, with all other convenient priviledges and munities." This has been the fundamental clause in the municipal history of Pennsylvania since 1681. It gave Penn the right to perpetuate the institutions already in existence on the banks of the Delaware, or to modify them if he chose, and transplant to the new province other English institutions that he might consider necessary for the well governing of his people. This right he exercised by establishing the county as the largest political division of the province, by modifying the existing town with its court into the township under the authority of the county courts, and lastly by founding towns and villages, which he incorporated into the city and borough. Thus, by introducing the county, the township, the borough, and the city, he fixed the seal of his enduring influence upon the local government of Pennsylvania. The boroughs were established within a few years after the proprietarys arrival, and though they were but a handful during the colonial period, they form the connecting links between their numerous successors and the ancient boroughs of England. Excerpt from Annals of Pennsylvania: From the Discovery of the Delaware Another desirable object of research connected with this early period, was the arrival and settlement of the English on our river, respecting which but little was known. As the first attempts were made by New Haven and other parts of New England, the author, (notwithstanding the records of the United Colonies had been generally examined by his father, and published in his Historical Collections, ) supposing that some facts could be found which had not attracted his attention, carefully examined the records in New Haven, Hart ford, Boston, and Plymouth, as well in the public oiiices as in possession of Historical Societies there, and in New York; which research, though not very fruitful, furnished some documents, which appear in their proper places in this work. Besides these, the records at New Castle and Dover have been put under requisition for information respecting the English, after the dis appearance of the Dutch and Swedes. Much valuable matter was thence obtained, especially at the former place, respecting the courts, (which then, under the governors at New York, managed affairs of both church and state, ) early grants of land, the landing, and taking possession by Penn, &c. The records in our own public ofiices have not furnished much information rela tive to this period, though they no doubt will be of value for the subsequent portion of the work. From these, and all other promising sources, the author has endeavoured, with much labour, time, and expense, to obtain the most authentic infor mation Of this early period, in which but little assistance could be derived from books or individuals. Only they who have been in the practice of examining ancient records, can appreciate the difficulty frequently attend ing it, in deciphering the names of persons and places, &c. This is men tioned to account, in part, for the variety, used in printing names, it being often impossible to ascertain the correct mode of spelling, as well as the person or place intended. In general, the mode adopted by the writers has been employed. Many places cannot, at the present time, be identified by the name.
