In 1881 I made a journey through the upper part of it as far as Todos Santos Bay, which abundantly confirmed all the reports I had heard of its fitness for agriculture, its sufficient water supply, and fine climate. In the summer of 1887, in the course of a sea-voyage to La Paz, I stopped at Ensenada, and found there the headquarters of an American company which had ao quired lands and the right to sell them to foreign col onists and settlers a privilege formerly denied, but granted under recent liberal laws of Mexico. As I had for many years desired to own land in the Peninsula, being convinced of the excellence of the country and cli mate, I selected and bought a small tract on and near the bay of Todos Santos.
