Ever wondered how to pay the next bill? Felt the world is unfair in economic rewards? Been indecisive about investing wisely? These types of fiscal questions are addressed from a Christian viewpoint in Economic Parables. Using his vast experience in the financial world as well as church ministry, the author invites you to listen directly to the words of Jesus and reflect on a number of economic parables to understand life in an increasingly globalized economy. Some of the answers you find will be surprising, in part because Jesus was a more sophisticated economist than he is given credit for. His words will shed light on many modern economic problems and decisions we may not think to go to the Bible about. By taking this journey through the economic parables, your response to finances and the global marketplace will be enriched from a balanced biblical approach. Each chapter contains a parable and reflection, followed by a question making this book ideal for group or personal Bible study.

In Genesis 46, Jacob calls God his shepherd as he blesses Joseph’s sons Manasseh and Ephraim. In the beloved Psalm 23, David sings about what it means that the Lord is his shepherd. In Isaiah 40, God promises to come to His people and tend to them like a shepherd. In John 10, Jesus says He is the Good Shepherd. In Hebrews 13, He is called the Great Shepherd. In 1 Peter 5, He is the Chief Shepherd. This is only a sample of places in the Bible where God’s relationship with His people is equated with that of a shepherd to His sheep. I became a pastor shortly after we started raising sheep, and I began seeing similarities between being a pastor and a shepherd. This makes sense since pastor comes from the Greek word poimen, which means shepherd. Jesus taught in parables, earthly stories with a spiritual meaning. That’s the idea behind this little book. I wrote stories about our dealings with our sheep that illustrate similarities I saw between my relationship with my sheep and my relationship with the people I shepherded in the church. I hope that these stories will entertain you and also give you insight as well. For pastors, maybe it will even help you in your ministry. Being aware of this has helped me in mine.

Christians need not feel like timid fawns among the wolves of 21st century, pluralistic, unbelieving worldviews. For just as the powerful buck on the front cover matured from a fawn like the one above, so timid Christians can, by diligent study, mature into confident and powerful witnesses for Jesus Christ. Written by a retired engineer and former atheist with 55 years of experience studying and photographing deer, the book weaves together biblical passages, photography and deer stories into parables that biblically unpack a rich and compelling compendium of the reformed understanding of Scripture. Parables of the Deer is also a succinct, intellectually robust apologetic and evangelistic resource that will equip Christians to become better and bolder witnesses. Even atheists, agnostics and adherents of other religions, who sincerely desire to plumb the depths of Christianity’s timeless truths, will find Parables of the Deer to be a comprehensive exposition of Christianity that will, by God’s gracious providence, result in many coming to saving faith in Jesus Christ.

About the Book This book came out of a desire to make sense of certain concepts of the gospel by relating them to ideas that one can readily perceive in everyday life experiences. It deals with certain concepts of the gospel that find their imperfect parallels in social, political and historical events and ideas. Even though these ideas may not perfectly or wholly represent the teachings of scripture which the author uses them to explain they surely lead the reader on to a simple understanding of these themes of the gospel. This is following after the example of Jesus who employed parables in order to pass His message across to the people. The purpose of the book is that the reader may come away with the thought that truly, the Gospel is not strange.

Preachers, in their call to preach the Scriptures, are not only charged with the responsibility of speaking its truth but of speaking in such a way that people of this age and culture understand. To do this, the preacher builds a bridge between todays people and the gospel of both testaments. For some, this task is more difficult than for others. Preaching to those living in an inner-city housing project is far removed from an outpost mission in the two-thirds world. Each community has its own way of thinking and attaches different values to symbols of its own making. For those called preach to a generation raised on MTV and late-night comedians or those rooted in various economic culturesfrom governmentsponsored jobs overseen by union bosses to entrepreneurial dot-com companiesor generations stretching from high school students to "freedom fifty-fivers," the task is enormous. When one adds to that the complexity of a radical shift in underlying intellectual and cultural assumptions, the task of preaching becomes even more complicated.
