Drawing on (s)cul(p)tural paradigms as diverse as paper-doll books, Mad magazine fold-ins and exploded schematic diagrams, the artists in The Paper Sculpture Book offer a hands-on, self-contained art show. Artworks meant to be cut out by the reader and assembled using very basic materials such as tape and rubber bands have been designed by 29 established and emerging contemporary artists, including The Art Guys, Minerva Cuevas, Seong Chun, Nicole Eisenman, Spencer Finch, Rachel Harrison, Stephen Hendee, Patrick Killoran, Glenn Ligon, Helen Mirra, David Shrigley, Sarah Sze, Chris Ware and Allan Wexler. Fred Tomaselli merges images from a birding book and an outdoor-clothing catalogue to create an ironic yet beautiful aviary. Janine Antoni's Crumple provides precise instructions for recreating a crumpled ball of paper, while Luca Buvoli invites the reader to take a pop-up flying lesson from the mysterious Professor M.a.S. Obviously, these are not your elementary-school paper airplanes.

Paper is readily available and inexpensive in comparison to other sculptural media, and can be manipulated with a set of simple tools. It is a tactile medium, which can be formed into three-dimensional shapes quickly and immediately through folding and cutting. This hands-on element is something I feel is important -- it allows the artist to engage immediately with the material, resulting in something physical and tangible. It is, perhaps, these factors that make it so appealing, not only as a tool to apply in different fields, such as model making for architecture, but as an activity for its own sake. A section of this book is dedicated to a selection of the techniques I use in the creation of my work, and which I demonstrate in my workshops. My aim is to show the basic principles of form-making in paper, which can then be expanded on and explored as the reader wishes. Also included are my sources of inspiration and details of my working practice, which shows the evolution of an initial idea into a final artwork. I hope this book offers an insight into my work, while offering inspiration to those who wish to explore the creative potential of paper.

Plain white paper -- it's one of the most common materials around your home, yet there's no end to the exciting and creative possibilities; just let this leading paper sculptor show how. All you need are scissors, glue, paper and five simple techniques: cut, fold, curl, bend and score. Most of the projects are based on four simple shapes: cylinders, cubes, cones and strips. From these elementary beginnings come 16 basic project types -- finger-puppet people and animals, rectangular lanterns and containers, colorful birds, basic house designs, a fantastic, fiery dragon's head and more than ten others. For holiday celebrations make tree, table and mantel decorations. Templates are featured for every piece of every project, so all you have to do is lay the paper down on them and trace the lines.
