This research is concerned with the development of computer-oriented procedures for the design of sampled data control systems. Two general areas of this problem are considered: the synthesis of optimal controllers having low dynamical order, and the design of adaptive control systems. The performance of the system is evaluated in terms of a quantitative performance criterion. Two new performance criteria are developed; the meanquadratic-error criterion and the average rate-of-decay criterion. Since the primary requirement of a dynamical system is stability, these criteria are examined in terms of the theorems from Liapunov's direct method of stability analysis. The analysis of the rate criterion may be applied to nonlinear as well as linear systems. Included in the discussion are illustrations on how some of the qualitative performance criteria, such as 'good' transient response, may be satisfied through proper selection of the mathematical performance criterion. The optimization procedures are based upon the concept of performance feedback in which the evaluated performance of the system is used directly in the adjustment of the system parameters.

Some new results in the optimum control of linear systems with respect to a quadratic performance criterion are given. It is assumed that the system is subject to additive random disturbances and that some state variables cannot be measured or can only be measured with additive noise. It is well known that when the disturbance and noise are normal random variables, the optimum controller is a linear function of the minimum mean squared estimates for the state variables. In this study the result is shown to hold without qualification. (Author).

Three problem areas associated with the design of linear sampled-data systems are considered. The first arises from having the transition and distribution matrices of the system be random variables, i.e., the random parameter problem; the second from having multiplicative noise at the input to the system, this being a special case of the first problem area; and the third from being unable to measure the state vector of the system exactly. In each of these 3 areas, the performance of the system is measured by using either a generalized sum-squared-error, a final-value, or a minimum-time criterion. The design procedures are based either upon minimizing the expected value of the performance index or upon minimiz'ng the performance index in the presence of worst-case variations within the system, e.g., minimizing the expected value of the sumsquared-error. In general, the results are in the form of feedback coefficients which relate the value of the optimum input to the value of the state vector of the system. (Author).
