In future cellular radio networks Radio over Fiber (RoF) is a very attractive technology to deliver microwave and millimeter-wave signals containing broad band multimedia services to numerous base stations of the network. The radio signals are placed on an optical carrier and distributed by means of an optical fiber network to the base stations (BS). In the BS the optical signals heterodyne in a photodiode to produce the radio signals which are then sent via a wireless link to the mobile units (MU). The optical fiber network provides high frequency, wideband, low loss and a means of signal distribution immune to electromagnetic interference. In this thesis, different methods of electrooptical upconversion were investigated. The generation of an optical double-sideband with suppressed carrier (DSB-SC) signal is a straightforward method due to the fact that only one optical modulator driven at half the millimeter-wave frequency is required. One or both sidebands were ASK-modulated with baseband data rates of up to 10 Gbps. Optical single sideband modulation proves to be dispersion resilient as error free transmission was demonstrated after 53 km of single mode fiber transmission for data rates up to 10 Gbps. Wireless links up to 7 m were also demonstrated, proving the feasibility of this approach for broadband wireless inhouse access systems.

Unlicensed millimeter-wave (mm-wave) band has been considered a potential wireless radio frequency (RF) carrier band for the future wireless communications. However, due to high attenuation of mm-wave signals in the air, the picocell base station (BS) has small coverage and many BSs have to be deployed to cover a large area. In this situation, it is necessary to minimize the cost of the BS and to shift the system complexity and expensive devices to the central station (CS). This can be achieved by implementing the radio over fiber (RoF) distribution scheme where the radio signals are generated at a CS and then distributed via a fiber link to a number of remote antenna BSs. Recently, optical mm-wave generation using optical frequency multiplication (OFM) has been adopted in RoF system to simplify the architecture of BSs and reduce the cost of the system. Unfortunately, the problem of how to effectively generate mm-wave signal using OFM with a simple configuration has not yet been well investigated. The objective of this thesis is to investigate and compare three modulation techniques for the generation of mm-wave using OFM with a dual-electrode Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM), i.e., Technique-A, Technique-B and Technique-C. Specifically, we investigate frequency quadrupling using three optical modulation techniques. The quality of the generated mm-wave for this frequency quadrupler is evaluated in an RoF system considering the impact of modulation index, optical filter bandwidth, and modulation frequency of the RF signal that drives the MZM. The detailed theoretical analysis, experiment, and simulation verification of these techniques are also carried out. Moreover, Q-factor expressions are derived for the mm-wave RoF system using the three OFM techniques for mm-wave generation. Then, a novel technique for the generation of mm-wave signal using frequency sixuplexing technique is also proposed and comprehensively compared with conventional technique, i.e., optical carrier suppression modulation. The proposed frequency sixupler technique leads to an improvement in receiver sensitivity compared to the conventional technique. Also, the concept proof of the proposed technique was verified by experiments. Finally, the experimental setup to generate a 30 GHz of multiband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MB-OFDM) mm-wave signal transmitted over fiber was performed to validate the proposed techniques and verify the simulation results. The results show that the OFM technique, i.e., Technique-C, is a very promising solution for emerging and future OFDM mm-wave ultra-wideband communications.

[ANGLÈS] Currently, the usage of wireless devices and broadband communications is growing. As a consequence the research in how to implement high data rates in Radio over Fiber (RoF) links is becoming an interesting field to investigate. This Master Thesis examines two proposals for developing high capacity millimetre wave RoF systems. The first proposal is the Integrated Photonic Broadband Radio Access Units for Next Generation Optical Access Networks (IPHOBAC-NG) project. It proposes novel photonic radio access for Wavelength Division Multiple Access (WDMA) networks. The proposed Radio Access Unit (RAU) enables connections between optical fiber and E-band (60-90 GHz) wireless communications, avoiding the re/demodulation latencies due to the coherent heterodyne detection and optical up/down conversion using 90o optical Hybrids for Wavelength Division Multiplexing Passive Optical Networks (WDM-PON). This proposal presents an alternative to allocate wavelengths in optical fibers without needing to implement multiplexers and demultiplexers for separating each wavelength channel. The second proposal consists of an Adaptive and Cognitive RoF System (ACRoFS) using an Optically Controlled Reconfigurable Antenna (OCRA) and a broadband horn antenna for 28-38 GHz frequency band. The novel OCRA, which is examined in this thesis, enables to reconfigure the antenna properties for three different frequency bands; 28, 34 and 38 GHz bands. Moreover, this Master Thesis explains different blocks for implementing a digital coherent optical receiver in order to understand how a coherent receiver is able to recover the received signal. This Master Thesis also examines the experimental setup and the results obtained for testing and characterizing two bidirectional V-band (57-63 GHz) transceivers.
