Excerpt from Obstetrics for Nurses Although this book is intended primarily for nurses, the author believes that medical students will find something of value in it, since the duties of a nurse often devolve upon them in their early years of obstetric practice. There are really two subjects considered in the book, - obstetrics for nurses and the actual obstetric nursing, - and the author has sought to combine them so that the relations of one to the other might be natural and mutually helpful in presenting this branch of medicine in a clear and interesting form. The illustrations are nearly all original, and were made expressly for the work. The photographs were taken by the author from actual scenes, and the reader is invited to study the details, as especial care was taken to render the pictures true to life in every respect. The text is the outgrowth of eight years' lecturing to the nurses of four different training schools. For the preparation of the dietary the author acknowledges his thanks to Mrs. E. E. Koch, Superintending Nurse of the Chicago Lying-in Hospital, and for the chapter on the Infant's Layette he is indebted to Miss Katherine DeWitt, who does private nursing for many of his cases. Excerpt from The Science and Art of Obstetrics The importance of Obstetric knowledge is further shown by the fact that very frequently the emergencies which occur in the practice of the art are sudden, and must be met promptly if met successfully. They may give no time for consulting books, or a fellow practitioner, but immediate as is the peril must be the means to avert it. Excerpt from Practical Obstetrics The publication of this edition has afforded me an opportunity of completing the statistics of the Rotunda Hospital obtained during the seven years of my Mastership. It has also permitted me to set forth my personal views on eclampsia, which I have done in the Appendix, by publishing a reprint of my paper read before the Obstetrical Section of the British Medical Association, 1911. The Appendix also contains observations by two of my former Assistant Masters on scopolamine-morphine in labour; and in addition a detailed account of the treatment of acute sepsis by vaccines. Excerpt from A Text-Book of Obstetrics The book has been thoroughly revised for the third edition. New matter has been inserted in the chapters treating of the Diagnosis of Pregnancy, the Pathology of Pregnancy, the Path ology of Labor, the Obstetrical Operations, and, in fact, in almost every chapter. More than fifty new illustrations, including three colored plates, have been introduced, almost all original. To make room for these additions the text has been condensed wherever possible. The literature of the world has been care fully reviewed, and the most important references of the last three years are given. The author gratefully acknowledges the kind reception ac corded the preceding editions, and is encouraged to believe that the improvements suggested by larger experience and friendly criticism have made the present edition distinctly superior to its predecessors. Excerpt from Researches in Obstetrics The Essays composing this Volume are chiefly gathered from my writings in various medical and scientific periodicals. While all such have been revised, some of them have been so altered and added to as scarcely to be with justice called republications. A few are now for the first time in print.
