Abstract: Proceedings of a 1980 United Kingdom conference on "killer diseases" are expanded to offer 14 papers for nutrition researchers, clinical nutritionists and other heath scientists by authorities in their respective fields concerning aspects of nutrition and major common debilitating, degenerating, or fatal diseases. Topics include: diseases of dietary affluence in the Western world (with special reference to dietary fiber); evidence for the association between diet and killer diseases; and the specific relationships between diet and cancer, epidemic coronary heart disease, diabetes, and chronic degenerative diseases. Other topics address: the role of essential trace mineral deficiences and the role of dietary-associated lipoprotein metabolism in cardiovascular disease; testing the lipid hypothesis; the roles of essential fatty acids and heavy metals in degenerative diseases; the role of zinc, manganese, chromium, and vitamin deficiencies in birth defects; and health influences of mycotoxins and trace substances in food.
