Excerpt from Notes of a Pilgrimage to Jerusalem and the Holy Land In these prosaic days there is no very great degree of hardship involved in the notion of a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, at least for a pilgrim who does not think it necessary to gratuitously increase the hardships of the journey, and who is able, more or less, to pay his way. Excerpt from A Brief Pilgrimage in the Holy Land: Recounted in a Series of Addresses Delivered in Wellesley College Chapel These brief Sunday evening addresses are attempts to bring back to the College some of the wonderful experiences of a sabbatical year abroad. They record the doings and feelings of three crowded weeks, - weeks to color the whole of a lifetime. The circumstances under which this little journey was taken were peculiarly happy. Many women travelling alone in the East, even in this day, feel obliged to join a party and go under the auspices of one of the great tourist agencies. I am not an inexperienced traveller, having sailed both the Atlantic and the Pacific, and crossed our own continent more than a score of times. So I did not follow the usual plan. I had one companion, a dear and sympathetic friend, and an excellent trained nurse who had been with me in illness, and who for the sake of the experience was travelling as my maid. I found on the Nile just the dragoman I wanted, - a man whose likeness to the butler of my childhood seemed to establish a bond. He was a native of Assouan, a man of sixty, keen and clever, who had begun life with Professor Georg Ebers, and had some real knowledge of archaeological treasures. Excerpt from A Pilgrimage to Jerusalem: The Story of the Cruise to the World's Fourth Sunday-School Convention, Held in the City of Jerusalem, and of a Ride Through Palestine This record of a pilgrimage to Jerusalem is an attempt to make the Holy Land real to those who, while perhaps not being in doubt as to the existence of that land. Yet think of it more as a land of the Bible than as a present-day fact in the Kingdom. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Jerusalem Jerusalem! What dying Splendour clings about the name! How it radiates still, out of the depths of time and dust! Almost I feel that I am guilty of profanation in daring to place it thus, at the head of this record of my unbelieving pilgrimage. Jerusalem! Those that have walked the earth before me have already found in it the inspiration of many books, books profound and books magnificent. All that I am going to try to do is to describe the actual aspect of its desolation and its ruins; to tell what, in our transitory epoch, is the degree of effacement suffered by its great and holy shade, which a generation soon to come will no longer be able even to discern.
