A pure joy to read.” —Washington Post Book World Both a heart-racing adventure and an uplifting quest, Walking the Bible presents one man’s epic journey- by foot, jeep, rowboat, and camel- through the greatest stories ever told. From crossing the Red Sea to climbing Mount Sinai to touching the burning bush, Bruce Feiler’s inspiring odyssey will forever change your view of history’s most legendary events. The stories in the first five books of the Bible, also known as the Torah, come alive as Feiler searches across three continents for the stories and heroes shared by Christians and Jews. You’ll visit the slopes of Mount Ararat, where Noah’s ark landed, trek to the desert outpost where Abraham first heard the words of God, and scale the summit where Moses received the Ten Commandments. Using the latest archeological research, Feiler explores how physical location affects the larger narrative of the Bible and ultimately realizes how much these places, as well as his experience, have affected his faith. A once-in-a-lifetime journey, Walking the Bible offers new insights into the roots of our common faith and uncovers fresh answers to the most profound questions of the human spirit. “Smart and savvy, insightful and illuminating.” —Los Angeles Times “An exciting, well-told story informed by Feiler’s boundless intellectual curiosity . . . [and] sense of adventure.” —Miami Herald

The sight of the Nile threading its way from the far recesses of the mysterious South, fertilizing the desert sands, and disclosing its presence by the belt of emerald green on either bank, throws the mind back into the long pre-christian centuries with their imperishable associations. What master pieces oi civilization, what renowned exploits, what celebrated cities, what world - famous names are linked to that river flowing at one's feet from the heart of Equatorial Africa! Then if one turns eastward, the eye ranges across the level expanse of the Delta to where the horizon melts into nothingness. But the observer knows that yonder towards the sunrising lie the land of Goshen, the Sinai Peninsula, and the Wilderness of the Wandering. Beyond these he remembers that further to the north is Canaan, which to the imagina tion of the toiling Hebrews was the land flowing with milk and honey. And thus he associates the two countries, Egypt in her royal magnificence, Palestine in her sweet rural beauty. The object of this book is to trace the various links which united these two contiguous territories, from the earliest times till the fall of Jerusalem in a.d. 70. It is a long story, covering at least seven millenniums, and-crowded with detail. The mere collecting of the facts, scattered over more than volumes and journals, has entailed many years of research, in the scanty leisure available to one with constant professional duties as a minister in a city charge. It is more than likely that many important aspects of the inter-relations between Egypt and Canaan have inadvertently been overlooked, and that books and articles which should have been consulted have been unwittingly neglected. But the volume is a serious attempt to fill a gap in the literature of the two countries which as yet has not been occupied. Further excavations in both lands will unquestionably greatly extend our knowledge. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. DOWNLOAD EBOOK →Water Resource Conflicts and International Security: A Global Perspective is an edited collection by Dhirendra K. Vajpeyi which analyzes the increasing global demand for water in economic and social development, and the dire need to efficiently manage this vital natural resource, particularly in water-scarce countries in the Middle East, Asia, and Africa. Several environmental- and human-induced factors, such as urbanization, industrialization, climate change, and agricultural needs, have created a near-crisis situation in many countries. Subsequently, there is an increasingly intense competition to utilize available water resources in these most heavily-affected regions; transboundary rivers, lakes, and streams which are shared by more than one country pose potential for political conflict, armed conflict, and, in the best of cases, cooperation. The contributors of Water Resource Conflicts and International Security present ten case studies in seven chapters, highlighting the competition between countries in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. In his conclusion, Dhirendra K. Vajpeyi suggests several policy measures that governments may implement in order to minimize the potential for conflict.

DOWNLOAD EBOOK →Water Conflicts applies cutting-edge thinking to identify pathways that can transform complex water conflicts. It challenges existing power-blind and politics-lite analysis that is very deeply-held and recurring in debates that suggest causal links between scarcity and violence-or peace. This book presents a much needed revision of transboundary water analysis, leading to a rethink on the way water is used and contested, with a focus on harm experienced both by the most vulnerable water users and the environment. Recognizing that conflicts are never static, Mark Zeitoun, Naho Mirumachi, and Jeroen Warner's "transformative analysis" provides multi-disciplinary tools and perspectives to understand and address the complexities involved. The approach is stress-tested through dozens of examples around the globe, and it incorporates collective evidence and knowledge of the London Water Research Group. The insights on water diplomacy will be most welcome by analysts, activists, diplomats, and all others tackling water conflicts. Seeking to motivate improvement of transboundary water arrangements towards further equity and sustainability as a practical agenda, the book is a fresh antidote to the detached role that researchers and policymakers often play.
