Excerpt from New Ideals in Rural Schools IN presenting a second monograph on the rural school problem in this series we register our sense of the importance of rural education. Too long have the rural schools suffered from neg lect. Both the local communities and the State have overlooked the needs of the rural school system. At the present hour there is an earnest awakening of interest in rural life and its insti tutions. Already there is a small but certain movement of people toward the country and the vocation of agriculture. A period of agricultu ral prosperity, the reaction of men and women against the artificialities of city life, the devel Opment of farming through the application of science, and numerous other factors have made country life more congenial and have focused attention upon its further needs. It is natural, therefore, that the rural school should receive an increased share of attention. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Successful Teaching in Rural Schools IF our American public school system is to provide adequately for the education of all boys and girls, the rural schools of the United States must be improved. It is important in the consideration of this problem that we discuss methods of finance and of administration. It is even more important that well-trained teachers be placed in every classroom, and that those already at work in rural schools grow increasingly more efficient. In this volume the author has presented to rural school teachers a record of achievement by a group of rural school-teachers which is not only enlightening but in spiring. The book could not have been written by one who approached the problem as a theorist. It is out of a rich experience in achieving the ideals set forth, that Dr. Pittman has written to the rural school-teachers of the United States. Excerpt from The Improvement of Rural Schools The rural schools are about to receive from educators the attention that they deserve. The modern industrial city, with its peculiar patho logical conditions, has commanded both public and professional interest, but the rural com munity and the rural school have been neglected. Indeed, in many respects, rural life and rural institutions have lost ground. Relatively speak ing, they are not so efficient as they once were. Excerpt from Better Rural Schools The rural school presents the most important problem in American education. In it are more than six million children coming from one great industry, agriculture the most fundamental and important of all industries. Under present conditions this occupation calls for an unusual degree of intelligence and skill. It demands the highest type of business management and industrial ability. And with the success of agriculture is linked the welfare of every American citizen, whatever be his status or vocation. Yet the rural school, the sole educational opportunity of most of our agricultural population, has been grossly neglected. In the midst of universal progress, it has been allowed to lag behind town and city schools. Abandoned to relative inefficiency, it has failed to hold the loyalty and) support of its constituency. The victim of changing social and industrial conditions, it has dwindled in size, diminished in influence, and lost step with the spirit of the times. Excerpt from Rural School, 1922: Survey, of New York State Educational Achievement The report of this section of the survey is distinctive for the following reasons: It furnishes an excellent illustration of the value of standardized tests in the study of schools. The facts that have been secured with reference to the reading situation in the rural schools of the State should be invaluable to administrative and supervisory officers and they should also arouse teachers and patrons to the need of securing more adequate results from the work of the schools in this subject. Reading is of basic importance. Not only does it condition progress in other school subjects, but deficiency in it may be a barrier to the intelligent discharge of the duties of citizenship. The elementary school has no more important subject to offer the children and the results should be better than are now being obtained. The use of the intelligence and standardized tests with such large numbers of pupils through so many grades, and in all sections of the State, should furnish valuable data for those who are interested in the relative effectiveness of rural and urban schools. The survey of the rural schools of New York State and the printing of this report were made possible through a grant from the Commonwealth Fund.
