Excerpt from New Graded Lessons in Arithmetic, Vol. 3 Several lessons are given that bear upon the work in manual training, thus connecting that important branch with the regular work of the schoolroom. For the same reason a few lessons are given in home furnishing and in domestic economy. The second section is intended for use in the last year of the grammar school, but may be used in those high schools where arithmetic is reviewed. For this reason it does not follow the plan of the preceding sections of the series. Excerpt from New Graded Lessons in Arithmetic, Vol. 7 This seventh book of the series follows the same general plan as the preceding books. The first few pages are devoted to a systematic review of the work of the preceding grade. Then the new work for the year is taken up and that is followed by a general summary. This arrangement is shown in the table of contents. In the advanced work of the grade especial emphasis is given to the applications of percentage, including bank discount, commercial discount, insurance, commission, taxes, etc. Great care has been taken to present these topics in a clear and simple manner so that the pupils may be able to understand them, without the help of the teacher. The aim has been to present a large variety of reasonable problems that appeal to the pupils as coming Within the range of their experiences. Several lessons are given that bear especially upon the work in manual training, thus connecting that important branch with the regular work of the schoolroom. For the same reason a few lessons are given in home furnishing and in domestic economy. The oral work, because of its importance, is emphasized here as it has been in the earlier books of the series. The work in algebra has been extended and the pupils are introduced for the first time to the simplest principles of constructive geometry. Excerpt from Complete Graded Arithmetic: Third Grade The alliance of oral, often called mental, Arithmetic with the written lessons illustrates the author's confidence in the principle of grading the topics and developing them through examples. No severer test of a theory can be applied than by putting it into exclusive practice. Written lessons may be given in which for weeks and months, even for terms and years, the pupils may conceal their failure to understand their work; but oral Arithmetic is the complete revelation of the progress and position of class and pupil in the science. It is impossible for a teacher to conduct an oral recitation which is beyond the pupils' comprehension. Interest at once ceases, and there are no answers to the questions. The successful union of oral and written lessons, as seen in all 'these pages, is an artistic achievement in pedagogy. In itself oral work unquestionably deserves the prominence it receives in these pages. Mental Arithmetic promotes atten tion, concentration, accuracy, ingenuity, skill, familiarity, and confidence. It tests all written work as to the essential point, whether or not the process is understood. It secures the edu cation of the class by the efforts of individuals, who are fol lowed and criticised by their fellows. It is a language training of the highest value. This series emphasizes to an unusual degree the necessity of employing the imagination in the study of Arithmetic. Most teaching of Arithmetic has appealed to the memory almost to the exclusion of the other faculties. Though the development of the reason is earnestly desired, little or no intelligent effort has been put forth with the certainty of accomplishing this object. The author has made it very clear that thinking or reasoning in mathematics involves the exercise of the imagi nation. Since faculties grow strong by exercise, work must be provided which will compel the exercise of the imagination. Excerpt from Complete Graded Arithmetic: Sixth Grade This bobk is similar in plan and arrangement to those of the series that precede it. It continues a review of the most important topics begun in preceding grades and gradually presents new topics. Throughout the book there is the same combination of oral and written work. The topics studied in the first books are not only reviewed, but further extended and applied. This is especially true of fractions and all work on surface and volume measurements. The new matter pre sented includes decimals, the completion of denominate num bers, and easy work in percentage. The rational treatment of decimals will commend itself to teachers. Pupils' work in multiplication and division of deci mals is generally mechanical and but little understood. In all examples in multiplication in which the multiplier is a decimal, pure or mixed, a certain number of decimal parts of a number is to be found. Children find seven eighths of a number by finding one eighth of it and multiplying that by seven. It seems rational to proceed in a similar manner in decimals. Pupils can understand division of decimals if they know they are finding how many times one number of decimal parts is contained in another number of like decimal parts. This is the method of division here presented. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
