In Narmadāparikramā. Circumambulation of the Narmadā River Jürgen Neuss offers for the first time a comprehensive study of the Narmadāparikramā, a singular Hindu pilgrimage, which comprises the complete circumambulation of the Central Indian river Narmadā. Following a brief general introduction, the first part of the book comprises a text-historical analysis of the Sanskrit texts which are traditionally regarded as the basis for this rite. The second part represents a synoptic translation of two modern pilgrims’ handbooks in Hindi, which link the mythological place names of the Sanskrit texts with actual geographical locations. Part three consists of synopses of available Sanskrit source texts, and the concluding part summarizes the many-fold findings and results of the study in thematically arranged maps.

Hindu theology views rivers as goddesses who confer blessings and spiritual purification and their release from the grip of the demon of drought is a recurring theme in the mythology. India is a country blessed with many rivers, but of these, seven are considered to be particularly important. Known collectively as Saptaganga, Sapta Sindhu or Saptapunyanadi, the Ganges, Yamuna, Sindhu, Sarasvati, Godavari, Narmada and Kaveri rivers are invoked at the start of every ritual. They weave through sacred narratives about gods, sages and heroes and define the physical, spiritual and cultural landscape of Bharatavarsha.

Inspired by a conference held at Columbia U. in March 1992 (though the roster of contributors extends beyond those who participated in the conference), this volume emerges from an attempt to understand development and the resistance to it in the contemporary world. Its subject is the development efforts in the Narmada River valley in central and western India, particularly the Sardar Sarovar Project (SSP). The 17 chapters are organized into seven parts: introduction; overviews of the SSP; histories of resistance to the SSP; resettlement and rehabilitation; technical and environmental concerns and alternatives; the independent review; and politics and development. Paper edition (unseen), $24.95. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
