With a foreword by Dr Howard Thurman's biographer Dr Luther E. Smith Jr this book contains the only surviving text of the Lawrence Lectures given by Dr Thurman at California's Berkeley Unitarian Church in 1978. As such, it is a unique record of the thinking of one of America's most celebrated African-American churchmen on the potential of religious experience and god-conscious living to transform society. Howard Thurman, as Dean of the Chapels at Howard University, and later at Boston University, was acclaimed by LIFE magasine as one of the 20th century's "e;Great Preachers"e; of America. His insights and teaching in a time of immense social upheaval influenced the lives of millions, including Martin Luther King, Jr. In the Lawrence Lecture reproduced in this book he insists that the most intense religious experience (the 'mysticism' of the title) can and should be the basis for involvement in social transformation. Also within the book is a biographical essay entitled 'The Temple above the Clouds' by the Rev Richard F Boeke, Minister of the First Unitarian Church at Berkeley 1968-1995. It was he who was instrumental in inviting Dr Thurman to deliver the Lawrence Lectures and who preserved the content of those lectures for eventual publication. His reminiscence of his ministry during those years of rapid change in social attitudes provides both a fascinating and highly personal account in itself and also an informative background to the issues addressed by Dr Thurman.

This culmination of award-winning author Andrew Harvey’s life’s work bridges the great divide between spiritual resignation and engaged spiritual activism. A manifesto for the transformation of the world through the fusion of deep mystical peace with the clarity of radical wisdom, it is a wake-up call to put love and compassion to urgent, focused action. According to Harvey, we are in a massive global crisis reflected by a mass media addicted to violence and trivialization at a moment when what the world actually needs is profound inspiration, a return to the heart-centered way of the Divine Feminine, the words of the mystics throughout the ages, and the cultivation of the nonviolent philosophies of Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Aung San Suu Kyi, and the Dalai Lama. Harvey’s concepts of radical passion and sacred activism fly in the face of restraint, of pessimism, of denial, of all that is inhumane, fusing the mystic’s passion for God with the activist’s passion for justice and for healing the division between heaven and earth, heart and will, body and soul, prayer and action. Sacred activism asks that we engage deeply on a personal, spiritual, and political level so as to become a fully empowered, fully active, and contemplative humanity that can turn tragedy into grace, and desolation into the opportunity to build and co-create a new world. Unlike many spiritual books, Radical Passion does not veil the dark with artificial hope. It explores the catastrophes of our current times and celebrates the ecstatic hope and divinity that is possible—right now and in the future.

Some say the great mystery of how one can live in two worlds at once died with Thomas Hunter many years ago. Still others that the gateway to that greater reality was and is only the stuff of dreams. They are all wrong. Rachelle Matthews, who grew up in the small town of Eden, Utah, discovered just how wrong when she dreamed and awoke in another world. There she learned that she was the 49th Mystic, the prophesied one, tasked with finding five ancient seals before powerful enemies destroy her. If Rachelle succeeds in her quest, peace will reign. If she fails, the world will forever be locked in darkness. In The 49th Mystic, Rachelle found the first three of those five seals through great peril and mind-altering adventure. But two seals remain hidden and the fate of both worlds hangs in their balance. As Rachelle Matthews sits deep in a dungeon, Vlad Smith is just getting started. Thomas Hunter's world is about to be turned inside out. The mystics say that there is no defense against the Fifth Seal--but finding it will cost Rachelle everything. So begins the final volume of high stakes in one girl's quest to find an ancient path that will save humanity. The clock is ticking; the end rushes forward. Ready? Set? Dream.
