We all want to share the family stories we have learned. Bringing research reports to family gatherings prompts yawns; writing a full-length book feels overwhelming. A book for young readers is in the "Goldilocks' Zone" between those two extremes. This kind of book is a non-intimidating way to both write and share a story. The process is simple. Choose the focus of the book. It can be the story of an immigrant family, or one ancestor's military service, or any other significant person or time period in your family's history. Collect the events, dates and places captured from your research effort. Then, construct a timeline. Then weave that timeline with the context of historical events and contemporary images into the fabric of an illustrated narrative. This process can help uncover holes in your research, and be expanded to the full-length book you have been wanting to write. The book discusses an example book about the military service of a WWI Pioneer Infantryman in "Marching and Mules" that was created using this process.

Landing in soft snow caused me to pitch forward violently onto my head and neck, my feet shooting overhead like a scorpion's tail. With the devastating force of the impact, the entire weight of my body went straight to my neck, bending my head so far backward, something had to give. It buckled. My neck dislocated and snapped so fast, it opened in the front like a Pez candy-dispensing machine. My spinal cord severed, and I didn't realize I landed feet first-all I felt was the massive uppercut as my face hit the ground. It was like no other crash-I couldn't stop falling. I couldn't bounce back. I couldn't self-erect, getting back to my feet. Then, nothing . . . At age 26, when Mike Shaw, freestyle skiing coach, stepped into the sunshine on a crisp Colorado morning, it never entered his mind by three-thirty that afternoon his life-as he knew it-would be over. Working with his team at the 2013 World Cup Competition at Copper Mountain, a catastrophic injury derailed his life's trajectory forever. "You'll never walk again," one doctor told him, knowing the prognosis wasn't good. Yet, with a mindset of courage, resilience, and gratitude, Mike proved his doctor wrong and, within three months, he took his first steps. Within the year? Skiing. Now an international speaker, mentor, and coach armed with an 'attitude of gratitude, ' Never Part of the Plan chronicles the author's journey as he conquers a debilitating spinal cord injury, making the most out of life's unexpected curveball. Dedicating his book to all readers, his experience is proof all of us can overcome and thrive when faced with adversity. All it takes is courage, resilience, and . . . gratitude.

By the first day of kindergarten, Olga Trujillo had already survived years of abuse and violent rape at the hands of her tyrannical father. Over the next ten years, she would develop the ability to numb herself to the constant abuse by splitting into distinct mental “parts.” Dissociative identity disorder (DID) had begun to take hold, protecting Olga’s mind from the tragic realities of her childhood. In The Sum of My Parts, Olga reveals her life story for the first time, chronicling her heroic journey from survivor to advocate and her remarkable recovery from DID. Formerly known as multiple personality disorder, DID is defined by the presence of two or more identities. In this riveting story, Olga struggles to unearth memories from her childhood, and parallel identities—Olga at five years old, Olga at thirteen—come forth and demand to be healed. This brave, unforgettable memoir charts the author’s triumph over the most devastating conditions and will inspire anyone whose life has been affected by trauma.

Teaching Mockingbird presents educators with the materials they need to transform how they teach Harper Lee's novel To Kill a Mockingbird. Interweaving the historical context of Depression-era rural Southern life, and informed by Facing History's pedagogical approach, this resource introduces layered perspectives and thoughtful strategies into the teaching of To Kill a Mockingbird. This teacher's guide provides English language arts teachers with student handouts, close reading exercises, and connection questions that will push students to build a complex understanding of the historical realities, social dynamics, and big moral questions at the heart of To Kill a Mockingbird. Following Facing History's scope and sequence, students will consider the identities of the characters, and the social dynamics of the community of Maycomb, supplementing their understanding with deep historical exploration. They will consider challenging questions about the individual choices that determine the outcome of Tom Robinson's trial, and the importance of civic participation in the building a more just society. Teaching Mockingbird uses Facing History's guiding lens to examine To Kill a Mockingbird, offering material that will enhance student's literary skills, moral growth, and social development.
