The U.S. Navy uses both military and commercial satellites for communication purposes. In the existing shipboard communications system, a separate antenna, most likely a reflector antenna, is used to communicate with each satellite. In the future, it is expected that these reflector antennas will be replaced by multi-function, low RCS (radar cross section) phased array antennas. In this report, we have designed (based on an existing method suggested by Amitay and Gans) a unique concept in which a single planar array (on a mobile earth station) can be used to communicate simultaneously with several geostationary satellites by generating multiple independent beams. These beams will need to be scanned in only one plane, thus reducing the number of phase shifters required for each beam. In the orthogonal plane, one or two hard-wired squints will be used to fix the beam position. This method will help to reduce the cost and complexity of phased array antennas on mobile earth stations.

The Frequency Diverse Array (FDA) antenna provides range - angle - time dependentbeampattern, potentially generating highly directional beams with high gain that may besteered directly and continuously to the desired position. This research explores using FDAantenna for tracking a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite. Although FDA array antenna hasbeen growing in use for radar communication systems with advantages of it is electronicallybeam steering, it is still not truly used in integrate with LEO systems. The mathematicalmodel of FDA antennas with dierent geometries for tracking LEO satellite is presented.Then, the radiation characteristics of linear and Planar-FDA under dierent situations areinvestigated. Further, the planar FDA array owns greater superiority over the linear FDAarray, and it can cover the observation space indicating great potential in LEO trackingand communication applications. A ground receiving antenna system based on planar FDAarray antenna is presented for tracking and communicating with (LEO) satellite at groundstation. This is required to minimize a complexity and the cost of ground station. Tomeet the system gure of merit (G/T) requirement, the radiation characteristics, the gainrequirements, the array size, the minimum number of elements and their distribution forseveral FDA array antenna architectures are calculated and analyzed. Moreover, a generaloverview of system temperature is presented including a noise model for FDA array antenna,and the link budget analysis and evaluation are introduced.

In this study, a new architecture for Ka-band multi-beam arrays was developed and demonstrated experimentally. The goal of the investigation was to demonstrate a new architecture that has the potential of reducing the cost as compared to standard expensive phased array technology. Nowadays achievements on mobile satellite communication system have prompted the development of several Non Geostationary Earth Orbit (Non-GEO) satellite systems that promises worldwide connectivity for real-time communications. The mobility of Non-GEO satellites require high directivity satellite tacking technique and reliable inter-satellite handover algorithm to ensure that connectivity between end users are not interrupted. Phased array antenna is proposed to obtain high directivity beam for satellite tracking. The mathematical model has demonstrated that a narrow beam with high directivity could be generated. A high directivity beam from phased array antenna is generated and steered to link up with incoming ascending satellite at one end when the connected outgoing descending satellite exceeded the defined critical elevation angle at the other end. It may help to lower the inter-satellite handover delay by accurately tracking the position of the satellite with the same signal level before the handover.
