At first the tests were conducted in the atmosphere, and detectable amounts of radiatio were recorded as far away as New Zealand. Since the mid 1970s, however, the tests have been conducted underground. Coral atolls are not designed to withstand nuclear explosions, and it is no surprise that severe fracturing of the atoll should occur. Releases of radioactivity through these fractures are not measured. However, it is inconceivable that they do not occur -- and it is not the people of France, but the peoples of the Pacific who are being affected. The campaign against the French nuclear testing at Moruroa Atoll is, however, just one small part of a much larger campaign. The interviews took place in 1987, when Dr Andy Biedermann, a Swiss doctor and crew member of the Greenpeace campaign ship Rainbow Warrior in 1985, made two trips to Polynesia, visiting Tahiti and some of the outer islands. At the end of his stay, Dr Biedermann was expelled from the territory for alleged "interference" in French defence affairs. Most of the people interviewed are Polynesian ...
