The joint enterprise between research in theoretical linguistics and the acquisition of phonology and morphology is the focus of this volume, which provides fresh data from Hebrew, evaluates old issues and addresses new ones. The volume includes articles on segmental phonology (vowel harmony and consonant harmony), prosodic phonology (the prosodic word, onsets and codas), and phonological errors in spelling. It attempts to bridge the gap between phonology and morphology with articles on the development of filler syllables and the effect of phonology on the development of verb inflection. Asymmetry in Grammar: Morphology, Phonology and Acquisition presents evidence that asymmetry, as a property of linguistic relations, is salient in grammar. The papers in morphology bring further evidence for the centrality of asymmetry in word-structure. It is shown that asymmetry is part of the internal structure of functional constructs such as determiners and complementizers, as it is the case for lexical constructs. Further evidence is presented for the asymmetry of prefixes in verb structure. A typology of formal objects based on the distinction between maximal and minimal categories is formulated. It is proposed that Formal Complexity drives the change from synthetic to analytic expressions. The papers in phonology point to the fact that asymmetry is part of that linguistic dimension in terms of processes that eliminates symmetric relations, in terms of head-dependency relations, in terms of relative scope of the distinctive features in any inventory, in terms of universal principles in combination with certain language specific choices. Moreover, the papers on acquisition bring to fore experimental data that point to the same direction. The asymmetry of grammatical relations provides the form of the initial state of language that enables the child to cope with the poverty of the stimulus. It is amazing how rapidly children develop in the first years of their lives. The acquisition of their mother tongue is especially fascinating because it is such a complex process. Not only the linguistic code has to be fully acquired but also all its rules and norms. That is, apart from the language's phonology, morphology, syntax, lexis and semantics, - constituting the code of every language -pragmatic rules are also important for the daily use and the full dominance of a language. This essay focuses on the most basic field, phonology, and explains how a child acquires the target language's phonology. Although the stages of the acquisition process are described generally since they are universal and hold true for all children independently of their mother tongue, the attention is on the English phonology in particular. First language acquisition in general is an important topic, not only for linguists. To have knowledge about it also helps the parents to raise children, especially in bilingual situations. I, myself, consider it very useful to write about such a topic as one can learn to understand what and how many stages and steps are actually involved. If we know how it works, perhaps we may also understand why children initially make errors or quite unusual utterances or even extraordinary sounds (in the pre-language stages) while acquiring the native language. The essay will provide information about the whole acquisition process. However, the main focus will be on the first four to six years.

This report describes the phonological development of Totontepec Mixe among four children (ages 2;3, 3;9, 4;7, and 4;11) with particular attention to the morphological processes that interact with and complicate phonology. Totontepec Mixe, a Mixe-Zoque language, is spoken by approximately 5000 people in the Sierra Norte of Oaxaca, Mexico. For centuries, Mixe speakers have been powerfully resisting accelerating language shift to Spanish, yet with each generation fewer children learn Totontepec Mixe. This investigation adds to the growing body of work describing the acquisition of the world’s languages in the face of unprecedented global language shift driven by colonization and globalization. This work, however, also recognizes and honors the survivance (Vizenor 1994) of Totontepec Mixe by demonstrating its continued use among a new generation of child speakers. The present analysis takes as its point of departure the characterization of the order in which the consonants, vowel qualities, and vowel nucleus shapes of Totontepec Mixe are acquired. It further explores the ways in which children reckon with the complex interplay between phonology and morphology in three domains: the acquisition of single-segment morphological formatives, the realization of the consonant clusters that stem largely from concatenation of these single-segment formatives, and the acquisition of the elaborate morphological system of vowel quality and vowel nucleus shape alternation that works in tandem with concatenative morphology. The goal of this research is to think beyond the documentation of child language and towards Mixe language reclamation, particularly with regard to language teaching. Language reclamation centered on children has proven extraordinarily effective in promoting multilingualism, a sustainable model for the preservation and celebration of linguistic and cultural diversity

Originally published in 1973, this book is an account of how the child learns the sound system of his native language, or how he learns to speak. A theory of the acquisition of phonology is derived from a detailed and rigorous analysis of the developing speech of a young child observed over a period of two years. The details of this analysis are elaborated in depth in chapters two and three and the major results of the study are given in chapter four.
