Slovakia is blessed with an abundance of natural beauties, and some of them are quite unique within Europe. Calcareous fens are such rare ecosystems and in Slovakia they are located almost exclusively in the Western Carpathian Mountains. These areas are hot spots of biodiversity and some protected and almost untouched sites are discussed in this book. Through this book the authors wish to make a contribution to peatland preservation and more effective conservation.

Arable land, deserts, mountains, forests, rivers, and coastal zones characterize the diverse regions in Eastern Europe and Central Asia (ECA). As varied as the geography is so are the policy directions taken by the region's governments concerning natural resource management. A lack of conservation measures, misuse, and poor management have impaired many of the natural resources now available in these countries. Although the pressure on natural resources in ECA is less than in other regions and the area has more abundant resources, the accessibility and utility of those resources belie the figures. Where there is arable land, the growing season is short. Where there are immense forests, the climate is harsh. To assist the Bank's client countries in ECA with sustainable use of natural resources, this volume identifies the various challenges, provides a history of the Bank's regional natural resource strategy, outlines a strategic framework, and proposes new strategies and policy instruments to implement them. Natural resources in this publication refer to "non-mineral" resources, such as, forests, rivers, and land.

The book is divided into two sections and represents the current trend of research in aquatic bioresource. In the section "Biology, Ecology and Physiological Chemistry", high-impact articles are contributed on reproduction, population genetics, evolution, biodiversity, biology and ecology of different aquatic faunas. Physiological chemistry of lipid, bioactive pharmaceuticals and chemical ecological aspects of aquatic organisms were discussed. In the section entitled "Conservation and Sustainable Management", authors highlighted conservation- and management-related issues of various bioresources in different regions of the earth. The book mentions the biological, ecological, physiological and genetic significance of aquatic organisms with resource potential. The authors stressed on rational utilisation and management of bioresource ensuring minimal damage of the aquatic ecosystem. This book would provide a direction towards sustainable ecological management of bioresource.

This is the second volume in the new multi-volume set, Global Biodiversity. Each volume in this series covers the biodiversity of a selection of nations in particular regions of the world. The volumes discuss and summarize the available information on both wild and cultivated plants, wild and domesticated animals, and the variety of microbes of the different nations. Global Biodiversity, Volume 2: Selected Countries in Europe looks at the biodiversity of selected countries of Europe, providing an abundance of biodiversity information on Bosnia-Herzegovina, France, George, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Norway, Serbia, Slovakia, Sweden, Turkey, and the United Kingdom. Each chapter features a different country and is written by research scientists and conservationists. The information covers geographical status, ecosystem diversity, species diversity, genetic diversity, and conservation efforts in that particular country. The authors provide statistical data on plants, animals, and microbes of that country along with genetic diversity with the focus on crop plants/cultivated plants and domesticated animals and their wild relatives.
