"This report addresses factors that influence production of an image which contains the necessary information to enable the imaging physician to report the diagnostic findings to the referring physician. The report treats such matters as the establishment of a quality control program, procedures, objectives and policies, photographic quality control, quality control in conventional radiography, fluoroscopic and cine imaging and mobile radiographic capacitor discharge and fluoroscopic systems. Also treated are x-ray tomography, mammography, dental radiography, and radiological special procedures. Computed tomography, digital imaging, nuclear medicine, ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging are also addressed. Information is provided on quality control elements of video systems and computers."--Knovel's description

In the 20 years since the publication of the first edition, the field of radiology has advanced in ways that would have been difficult to predict. The most notable change relates to the way images are recorded and stored. Film and film processing, which had been used in the field since the very beginning, are becoming a thing of the past. Radiography has progressed dramatically to using digital technology, and that is the focus of this new edition. A goal of this text has always been to prepare the student who wishes to enter the x-ray servicing profession. This third edition has been completely rewritten and updated to focus on equipment currently in use and to address the latest in digital imaging. In addition, with new illustrations and a revised chapter order, the book is more approachable to students. The book includes chapters on the history and development of radiographic equipment; types of equipment found in the general radiographic room; fundamentals of radiography; safety practices in servicing; installation processes; preventive maintenance; image quality; troubleshooting and repair; theory, service, maintenance, and calibration of tomographic equipment; and the servicing, electronic calibrating, and troubleshooting of mammography units. In addition, there is expanded discussion on mobile x-ray units, paired with digital receptors, a growing trend in x-ray services. The book is further enhanced with many illustrations, including some new to this edition. The text continues to serve as a unique and timely universal manual for x-ray service and biomedical engineers and students as well as a helpful resource for radiologists.

An experimental study designed to provide a basis for estimating protection against fallout radiation was made on two types of structures at the Nevada Test Site. This study was sponsored by the Civil Effects Test Operations, Division of Biology and Medicine, U. S. Atomic Energy Commission. The two buildings studied were a lightly constructed building with a basement, and an underground group shelter. An idealized fallout radiation field was simulated by the use of the Mobile Radiological Measuring Unit (MRMU). The unit employed a sealed radioactive Co(60) source that was pumped at a uniform speed through a long length of flexible tubing evenly distributed over the area of interest. Radiation levels at selected points inside the structures were measured with sensitive ionization-chamber detectors. These measurements were compared with measurements taken under actual fallout conditions at an earlier time and were also compared with the theoretical calculations. Protection factors from fallout data and MRMU data at the basement structure compared roughly within a factor of 2. This was good, considering the limitations of the two sets of data and other factors affecting the differences. Comparisons between protection factors from fallout data and MRMU data at the underground group shelter were excellent. MRMU data and theoretical calculations also compared satisfactorily.
