Excerpt from Exhibition of Works by the Late Sir John Everett Millais, Bart., President of the Royal Academy: Winter Exhibition, Twenty-Ninth Year, 1898 John everett millais was born at Southampton on June 8, 1829. His family had for some generations been resident in Jersey. The bent of the boy's mind declared itself at a very early age, as may be seen by reference to No. 218 in the present Exhibition, a frame containing drawings done when he was only seven years old. As he Showed great promise of success as an artist his parents, when he was nine years old, brought him to London for the purpose of taking advice with reference to his future career. Being encouraged by Sir Martin Archer Shee, then President of the Royal Academy, to whom his drawings were shown, to do all in their power to help the cultivation of his faculties, and to speed him in the career for which Nature had evidently intended him, they settled in London, and sent him, in the winter of 1838 - 89, to a preparatory school for the Academy kept by Henry Sass.
