Such has been the fate, however, of Mies's Krefeld Villas, a pair of neighboring brick residences of typically restrained elegance built from 1927 to 1930. Their anonymity is, to some degree, Mies's own doing; in 1959, in his only public comment about the projects, he quipped that he would have preferred to use more glass, but the clients objected. "I had great trouble," he said. Here they guide us through the two villas, which were converted into a joined museum of contemporary art after World War II. Each chapter begins with a study of an artist who has created a site-specific installation within the villas. It is devoted to a close analysis of Mies' residential architecture, built and unbuilt, from 1923 to 1951. Many of its conclusions are pertinent to the whole of Mies' output. The book presents penetrating discussions of both the Concrete and the Brick Country House projects, two of the famous Five Projects of the 1920s which made Mies' early reputation; and, among others, the Lange and Esters Houses of 1927-1930; the Barcelona Pavilion and Tugendhat House of 1928-1930; and, in America, plans for a house in Wyoming for the Stanley Resors, and the Farnsworth House of 1946-1951. The analysis and the illustrations demonstrate a continuous development toward realization of the goal Mies himself described: &"To bring Nature, houses and people into a higher unity.&" The original German language edition accompanied an exhibition organized by the Kaiser Wilhelm Museum, Krefeld, in conjunction with the Mies van der Rohe Archive of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, on the occasion of the public opening of the restored Lange and Esters Houses, now owned by the Kaiser Wilhelm Museum. All of the works exhibited are reproduced in this volume. Dr. Tegethoff's text, based on extensive research in the Mies Archive and other sources, brings to light much new information on the origins of Mies's ideas, his working methods and relationships with clients, as well as the actual planning and structure of the houses. One might even say that the two neighboring brick villas in Krefeld, Germany (1927–30) have long been treated as a threat to Mies’s legacy: doubly damning evidence ?rst repressed by the architect himself and subsequently suppressed by his apologists. The history of this neglect is in its own right revealing, for to make two substantial buildings essentially disappear suggests a remarkable degree of consensus between the architect and his critics. [2, 3] Mies, as we know, said little about much, but particularly little was said about Haus Lange and Haus Esters. The architect proffered his only known assessment of the villas in a public dialogue at the Architectural Association in 1959. With thirty years of hindsight, Mies made his fateful condemnation: “I wanted to make this house [Haus Lange] much more in glass, but the client did not like that. I had great 1 trouble. ” This single remark—often published in tandem with an early pastel sketch of Haus Esters depicting a generously glazed garden facade or a photograph of the architect at work on the same—has been repeatedly cited to explain away these “compromised” works as the result of dif?cult clients.

DOWNLOAD EBOOK →Using empathy, as established by the Vienna School of Art History, complemented by insights on how the mind processes visual stimuli, as demonstrated by late 19th-century psychologists and art theorists, this book puts forward an innovative interpretative method of decoding the forms and spaces of Modern buildings. This method was first developed as scholars realized that the new abstract art appearing needed to be analysed differently than the previous figurative works. Since architecture experienced a similar development in the 1920s and 30s, this book argues that the empathetic method can also be used in architectural interpretation. While most existing scholarship tends to focus on formal and functional analysis, this book proposes that Modern architecture is too diverse to be reduced to a few common formal or ornamental features. Instead, by relying on the viewer’s innate psycho-physiological perceptive abilities, sensual and intuitive understandings of composition, form, and space are emphasized. These aspects are especially significant because Modern Architecture lacks the traditional stylistic signs. Including building analyses, it shows how, by visually reducing cubical forms and spaces to linear configurations, the exteriors and interiors of Modern buildings can be interpreted via human perceptive abilities as dynamic movement systems commensurate with the new industrial transportation age. This reveals an inner necessity these buildings express about themselves and their culture, rather than just an explanation of how they are assembled and how they should be used. The case studies highlight the contrasts between buildings designed by different architects, rather than concentrating on the few features that relate them to the zeitgeist. It analyses the buildings directly as the objects of study, not indirectly, as designs filtered through a philosophical or theoretical discourse.
