God is very much interested in man. He is seeking to obtain the man after His own heart. Indeed, He is determined to provide for His only begotten Son a counterpart in man. And in relation to that end and purpose, there is to be found depicted in the Bible's very first book the biographies of especially eight different persons; and in each one of these eight individuals God has worked into him one special quality or characteristic of His beloved Son Jesus Christ. By combining these particular eight qualities together, there emerges the man after God's heart whom He shall give to His Son as the Beloved's counterpart. For by putting these eight characteristics or qualities together, the result shall be the Bride of the Lamb of God. Now these eight individuals and their differing qualities or characteristics are as follows: Adam and the Tree of Life—even the life of God (in Christ), Abel and his sacrifice: a lamb, Enoch's walking with God into heaven, Noah's ark of abiding (in Christ), Abraham's altars, Isaac's wells of living water, Jacob's testimonial pillars, and Joseph's throne life. Those who possess these qualities shall constitute the Bride of the Lamb. May God soon obtain the Bride for His beloved Son!

I asked the Lord what men/woman seek and lack in their lives today. The Lord answered and said, "Their identity in Christ." I asked the Lord to show me a man and reveal the identity of such man in Christ. The Lord answered and said, "I will show you the identity of a man after my own heart." What did I know about David? I knew that he was a shepherd boy who slew a giant. I mean, who would not be fascinated by a story of a boy that slays giants? As I progressed through the journey of studying the Bible about the life of David, I continuously wondered why David was called a man after God's own heart. Why did God not refer to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, or Moses as men after his own heart? The story of David portrays a life of an ordinary shepherd boy that became the king of Israel. His life, however, was ridden with sin, and yet God called him a man after his own heart. It was only later that the Spirit revealed to me that it was because of David's fierce intimate desire to have a relationship with the living God that he was characterized as a man after his own heart (Acts 13: 22). God revealed the character of David through this story that runs parallel with the personal relationship that Jesus longs for with each one of us--a relationship that cannot be tainted by our sins because of the blood of Jesus Christ. You are all called for a time like this to be a man/woman after God's own heart just as he had ordained it so that you can have fellowship and an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ. You are the only one that can find your true identity through your relationship with Christ! A shepherd boy became king! What are you waiting for? The blood of Jesus works everlasting into the past, future, and present. May the story of David inspire you to a greater understanding of the heart of God the father through his son, Jesus Christ. You have been set free! You are a man/ woman after God's own heart because of Jesus. John 8 verse 36 states, "When the Son sets you free, you shall be free indeed."

The life of Moses is most inspiring. At a certain point in that life he was called by God to be "My servant." Indeed, living for 120 years, Moses' servanthood was divided into three periods of 40 years each. During the first 40 years Moses tried to serve God according to his own way—which was the way he had learned from the world. So, during the second 40 years of his life, which was spent entirely out in the desert wilderness of Midian, Moses had to unlearn all he had learned previously, and also he had to learn God. Finally, throughout the entire concluding 40-year period of his long life, Moses was used by God as His faithful servant. Let us see that, like Moses, in order to be able to serve God, we must first unlearn all which we have learned from the world. Then, and only then, can anyone serve God. A true servant of God must be selfless and be absolutely obedient to God. He may suffer incessantly from others, but he will be approved by God. And this is all that matters. May we all learn to serve God as Moses did!

Scripture says, "I will give you shepherds after my own heart, who will lead you with knowledge and understanding" (Jeremiah 3:15). Most of Israel's pastoral imagery is grounded in two traditions: Moses as God's under-shepherd and David as shepherd-king. These traditions, explains author Timothy S. Laniak, provided prototypes for leaders that followed, and formed the background for the ministry of Jesus, the good shepherd. The pastoral role was central to the ongoing life of local churches in the Christian movement, and today's pastors are still called to be shepherds after God's own heart, to lead his people, living on the margins of settled society, to their eternal home. In this excellent study, Laniak draws on a wide range of Old and New Testament texts to develop the biblical theology of "shepherd" imagery, and concludes with some principles and implications for contemporary pastoral ministry. A wonderful resource for pastors, teachers and seminary students, as well as readers interested in the study of biblical imagery.
