Excerpt from Memorials of the Moravian Church, Vol. 1 Thus, it was thought, a service would be done to the cause of history generally, at the same time that these memorials (often documentary, and if not so, yet drawn from original sources) might tend to throw light upon or remove misapprehensions, entertained by members of the church as well as by others, in reference to important events and leading characters of the past. Excerpt from A Memorial of the Dedication of Monuments Erected by the Moravian Historical Society: To Mark the Sites of Ancient Missionary Stations in New York and Connecticut T HE following pages contain an account of the dedi cation of two monuments, lately erected by the' Moravian Historical Society, on the sites of once flourishing Moravian mission stations, among the New England Indians, in New York and Connecticut. The Committee to whom that body intrusted the execu tion of its project, felt themselves called upon to secure a record of a historical transaction, and at the same time to gratify the inquiry and interest known to have been awakened on the side of the public, as well as among many individuals more directly concerned. With the preparation of such a narrative the Committee on Monuments charged the author of this volume. Naturally enough he did not contemplate inserting the Moravian sacred music, and the full detail of the ritual of the Moravian Church; but by others it was thought proper that the narrative should be a faithful record of all that passed at scenes deeply interest ing and impressive, for that thus might best be preserved forever fresh the very words and tones that in those plea sant scenes had bound in loving brotherhood the hearts of those Who had gathered together to honor the memory of men of peace, of faithful soldiers of the cross. Excerpt from A History of the Moravian Church in New York City The year nineteen hundred and twenty-two is especially important because it marks the two hundredth anniversary of the Renewal of the Unitas Fratrum, or Unity of the Brethren, now generally known as the Moravian Church. The renewal of this ancient Protestant Church meant a great deal to the world in general and to the Christian Church in particular. Some of the most glowing pages in church history have been written by Moravians. The record of their early achievements is not unlike the Acts of the Apostles. At a time when the greater part of the Christian Church lay in the cold grip of a rationalistic formalism which had little or no concern for the welfare of anybody, the hearts of the people of Herrnhut were on fire for God. Their one passion was Christ, and to make Him known their greatest desire. Therefore they went anywhere and everywhere, preaching the gospel. In due time the Church spread to Great Britain, North America, and other lands. In America the conversion of the Indians engaged the zealous attention of the Moravians for many years. At the same time, they carried on extensive evangelistic labors among the many white people who were without church affiliation. It Js natural, therefore, that their hearts should be directed to the religious needs of the metropolis. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
