Excerpt from Memorial of the First Centenary of Georgetown College, D. C: Comprising a History of Georgetown University, and an Account of the Centennial Celebration In the adoption of this suggestion the scope of the proposed work was extended so as to include a history of the College during its first century. Unexpected difficulties, encountered in the execution of this plan, have deferred the publication of the book to a time when the motives that led to its inception may seem to have lost something of their force. Delay, how ever, has probably operated to increase the accuracy and perfection of the work. Moreover, the history of an institution that initiated, however humbly, the higher education of Catholics in the United States, and whose development has always been closely linked with the general progress of college and university teaching in our country, as it cannot be lacking in permanent interest to scholars, can never be considered untimely. The volume is therefore put forth at this time Without apology. It remains only to give public expression here to the gratitude due from the Faculty of Georgetown University to the two authors and the publisher Of this book, and to all who, by written or Spoken word, by co-operation, as individuals or as members Of committees, have aided to the worthy com memoration Of the first Centenary of Georgetown College. Excerpt from Memorial of the Centennial Anniversary: Of the First Presbyterian Church, Augusta, Georgia It is sought herein to preserve in a worthy form the proceedings of that memorable occasion; to garner up the wisdom of many minds and the fruitage of rich and manifold experiences; to tell of the things which we have heard and know and which our fathers have told us. So much of the church's history as could be gathered is herein presented; able addresses on Education, Home and Foreign Missions are made record of; place is given the exercises of the Sabbath school on Centennial Sabbath, and under various and proper headings are set forth several phases of the centennial occasion itself, and also the activities by which we have sought to glorify God. The admirable sermon of Rev. Dr. G. B. Strickler on The Distinctive Doctrines of the Presbyterian Church is reluctantly omitted in the volume because the distinguished author says, I am anxious to pre sent, some time in the future, our distinctive doctrines in a popular form that will commend them to some who now are prejudiced against them. We shall anticipate this intended work from Dr. Strickler with confidence in its great polemical value. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. In a period characterised by an unprecedented cultural engagement with the past, individuals, groups and nations are debating and experimenting with commemoration in order to find culturally relevant ways of remembering warfare, genocide and terrorism. This book examines such remembrances and the political consequences of these rites. In particular, the volume focuses on the ways in which recent social and technological forces, including digital archiving, transnational flows of historical knowledge, shifts in academic practice, changes in commemorative forms and consumerist engagements with history affect the shaping of new collective memories and our understanding of the social world. Presenting studies of commemorative practices from Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe and the Middle East, War Memory and Commemoration illustrates the power of new commemorative forms to shape the world, and highlights the ways in which social actors use them in promoting a range of understandings of the past. The volume will appeal to scholars of sociology, history, cultural studies and journalism with an interest in commemoration, heritage and/or collective memory.
