Excerpt from Memoirs of the Countess De Genlis, Vol. 4: Illustrative of the History of the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries Tu E revolution broke out on the ninth of July, the evening previous to my birth-day, which was cele brated at Saint Leu by charming plays. A painter of the name of Girohx performed the character of Polyphemus in a pantomime; and while thus en gaged, we were informed of the first commotions that took place in Paris. M. Giroux was so de sirous of seeing what was going on, that the mo ment he had performed his part, he jumped into a cabriolet, and set off in all haste for the capital, without taking time even to change his dress. The costume he had on, and his painted eye-brows, caused such astonishment, that he was stopped at the barriers, where he was detained more than three hours, and interrogated very strictly as to the motives of this singular disguise.
