Excerpt from Memoirs of the Cardinal De Retz, Vol. 1 of 4: Containing the Particulars of His Own Life, With the Most Secret Transactions of the French Court and the Civil Wars P After what has been faid of the general efieem which thefe Memoirs have obtained, I believe that it will be thought a misfortune, by others as well as me, that there are'fo many chafms or gaps to be found in them. The perfons pofiefl'ed of the author's original copy, have without doubt had their reafons not to let it fee the light, but thus maimed and disfigured, fo that we have no right to complain; though it were to be withed that we had it more perfeet. The Memoirs of Cardinal de Retz - Volume 3 [Historic court memoirs] by Jean Francois Paul de Gondi de Retz Cardinal Mazarin thought of nothing else now but how to rid himself of the obligations he lay under to the Prince de Conde, who had actually saved him from the gallows. And his principal view was an alliance with the House of Vendome, who had on some occasions opposed the interest of the family of Conde. In Paris the people libelled not only the Cardinal, but the Queen. Indeed it was not our interest to discourage libels and ballads against the Cardinal, but it concerned us to suppress such as were levelled against the Queen and Government. It is not to be imagined what uneasiness the wrath of the people gave us upon that head. Two criminals, one of whom was a printer, being condemned to be hanged for publishing some things fit to be burnt and for libelling the Queen, cried out, when they were upon the scaffold, that they were to be put to death for publishing verses against Mazarin, upon which the people rescued them from justice. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.
