Excerpt from Memoir of Henry Clay To almost any eye which surveys dispassionately the field of our National History during the last sixty or seventy years, the stately figure of Henry Clay will come at once and prominently into view. No American eye wall ever overlook it. No American pen will ever attempt to dwarf or disparage it. All that Webster was to the North, all that Calhoun was to the South, Clay was to the Great West; perhaps more than all. Neither of these three remarkable men ever commanded the votes of the whole country, or grasped the coveted prize of the Presidency. But together - sometimes in opposition, sometimes in conjunction, and almost always in rivalry - they exercised an influence on public affairs far greater than that of any other three men of their times. They did not leave their peers. Thus far they have had no successors of equal individuality, prominence, and power. Their last signal public efforts were made, side by side, in the Senate of the United States, in support of what were called the Compromises of 1850. Before two years more had elapsed, they were all three in their graves. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The True Henry Clay It is generally assumed that he was the father of protection. In truth bewas only a sort of step-father who at an important period gave his foster-child not only a scolding, but a drubbing which nearly resulted in death. It is Often assumed that he was the father of the sound-money doctrine because he was a fervent champion of the National Bank. As a matter of fact, he was wabbly on this subject, voting, as a rule, against Benton's specie standard, which is to-day the law of the land. His first great speech in the Senate was against the bank. It is sometimes assumed that he was the real father of the law to give the settler on the public lands a free or very cheap title. In reality he was usually on the opposite side, demanding big prices, but Offering the surplus as a largess to the States. Excerpt from The Life and Public Services of Henry Clay The first edition of this work appeared, during the autumn of 1842, at which time, there was no published memoir of Mr. Clay (so far as the writer's knowledge extended) except that by George D. Prentice, Esq., which terminates with the close of John Quincy Adams's administration. To this eloquent biographical sketch, the Author takes pleas ure in acknowledging his indebtedness, for a number of interesting facts. The new and improved edition of his life OF clay, now offered to the public, has been carefully revised - some errors have been corrected - several omissions have been supplied - aud the Memoir has been brought down to the spring of 1848. It is hardly necessary to say, that the portrait; which accompanies this edition, is from a painting by linen, taken some twenty years since. It was regarded as a like ness at that time. E. S. Excerpt from The Private Correspondence of Henry Clay The editor must crave pardon of numerous persons who have kindly furnished him with letters of Mr. Clay, which could not be inserted for lack Of room, and for other causes. Notwithstanding the rules which he was obliged to adopt, the volume has swollen to un expected dimensions. Where the editor has used the letters of persons now living, he has been very careful not to insert any to the use of which he would imagine they would have any objection. On the contrary, he has used only such as he supposed they would be very willing, if not gratified, to see in such a place. If there should be any exceptions to this rule, the imperative demands for the truth of history in matters on which the parties concerned could not fairly claim to be consulted, must be the apology.
