Excerpt from Medical and Surgical Reports of the Boston City Hospital, 1900 Heretofore the report has been issued in the summer, but this year it was decided to delay its publication until the appropriation had been made by the Trustees. The manuscript was received from the contributors on November 1, and, owing to their promptness and active cooperation, the editors are enabled to issue the report on December 1. This year the Boston City Hospital Alumni Association placed $150 at the disposal of the editors, to be expended at their discretion. A portion of this money has been spent for illustrating this volume. This money is of great value to the report, in that it enables contributors to illustrate their articles and allows the appropriation of money of the Trustees to be used for printing a larger volume. Excerpt from Medical and Surgical Reports of the Boston City Hospital, 1913 The editors wish to acknowledge the kindness of the Trustees in making possible the publication of these reports. The expense of the illustrations has been defrayed by contributions from the Trustees, the Boston City Hospital Alumni Associa tion and the authors of the different articles. The editors have been greatly aided by Dr. Walter C. Howe, and they desire especially to express their indebtedness to him and their appreciation of his services. It is hoped that another volume of reports will be published as soon as the material available seems to warrant it. Excerpt from Medical and Surgical Reports of the Boston City Hospital, 1899 The camp was patterned in general upon the tent ser vice which the Hospital has occasionally maintained dur ing previous summers, but the accommodations were larger and more complete than have been before furnished in the open air. As the autumn advanced a number of polling booths, affording a better protection against the cold, were sub stituted for some of the tents, and this camp continued to be occupied satisfactorily by the three medical services until the first snowstorm of the season found the number of soldier-patients so far reduced that they could be housed within the wards. Since the publication of the eighth series the Hospital has lost by death, Dr. Benjamin E. Cotting, and has received the resignations of the following gentlemen: Drs. Charles F. Folsom, Benjamin Tenney and R. W. Lovett. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Medical and Surgical Reports of the Boston City Hospital, 1898: Ninth Series The accompanying table shows the relative frequency of diphtheria in males and females. It will be seen from this table that, while the susceptibility to the disease is greater in females than In males, the death-rate in the former is con siderably lower than in the latter. There seems to be no satisfactory explanation of this fact. In the earlier years of life sex certam can have no influence on the susceptibility to disease, neither can it have any efiect on the resisting power of the individual. In the first five years of life the difference between the death-rate of the sexes is very marked, being per cent. In males, and per cent. In females. From five to ten years the death-rate in males is per cent., and that of females is 7; from ten to fifteen yeais the rate for males is While that of females of a correspond ing age, comprising forty-nine cases, the death-rate is 0. Over fifteen years of age the death-rate for males is 8 per cent., while that of females is 4 per cent. A marked difier ence. Lennox Browne in his work, entitled Diphtheria and its Associates, gives an analysis of cases, in which he states that the percentage of mortality in males under five years of age is in females Between five and ten years, males per cent., females between ten and fifteen years, males females and over fifteen years, males females per cent. The percentage of mortality at the South Department of the whole number of males is and that of females, as compared with that of per cent. In males and per cent. In females in Brome's table. Table of Eight Hundred Cases of Diphtheria, by Sex and by Age, with the Deaths. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Medical and Surgical Reports of the Boston City Hospital, 1897 The eighth series of the Medical and Surgical Reports of the Boston City Hospital appears again as of late as an annual publication. The number of pages has been increased, but even with more space the editors have been forced to postpone to another year some contributions which they would gladly have included, among others a clinical and pathological statement of the cases of cerebro-spinal menin gitis in the Hospital during a present epidemic. The ana tomical and bacteriological study of acute and subacute nephritis, the statement of the treatment of diphtheria in the department for contagious diseases, the paper on the adapta tion of X-rays to medical practice, though necessarily long, are valuable and timely contributions. It is not strange that our report should grow as the Hospital grows. There are one hundred and fifty more beds than last year, the number of beds being now eight hundred and fifty-six, of which three hundred and one are in the contagious wards. Since the publication of the last report the Hospital staff has lost by death Doctor vvuc. B. Fifield, a member of the consulting board; Doctor edward J. Forster, a Visit ing physician for diseases of women, and for a number of years the efficient secretary of the medical and surgical staff; and Doctor edward wigglesworth, for many years at the head of the department for diseases of the Skin.
