These syrups, which have been imitated in many proprietary preparations, are useful tonics, furnishing an easily oasidizable series of salts which may be readily converted into phosphates in the body. They do not represent the activity of phosphorus compounds. Like the phosphates, they may be used in anaemia, rickets, mollities ossium, neurasthenia, debilitated conditions generally, and tuberculosis, in the last of which the claim of curative action made for them is not now believed. Sarsaparilla is the root of Smilax mficinalis, Swnilax_rnedica, Smilax papyracea, and of other undetermined species of Smilax (nat. ord. Liliaceae). It has been considered to be diuretic, diaphoretic, and alterativc, but physiological experimentation has proven it practically inert. It is used principally as a vehicle for potassium iodide, in the form of Syrupus Sarsaparillae Compositus, in syphilitic disorders. Its other pr-eparatiomz are: Decoctum Sarsaparillae Compositum contains sarsaparilla, guaiac wood, glycyrrhiza, and niezereum; dose f, ?;iv--vj. Extractum Sarsaparillae Fluidum, dose f-3ss--j. Extractum Sarsaparillae Fluidum Compositum contains sarsaparilla, sassafras, glycyrrhiza, and mezereum; dose f 5ss--j. Syrupus Sarsaparillae Compositus. Made with the fluid extracts of sarsaparilla, glycyrrhiza, and senna, flavored with oil of sassafras, anise, and gaultheria. Dose f. ss. The wood is the heart-wood of Guaiacum oflicinale and of Guaiucum sanctum (nat. ord. Zygophylleae). Habitat: West Indies and Northern South America.
