Summer 1948. In the scenic, remote river town of Oregon, Illinois, a young couple visiting the local lovers’ lane is murdered. The shocking crime garners headlines from Portland, Maine, to Long Beach, California. But after a sweeping manhunt, no one is arrested and the violent deaths of Mary Jane Reed and Stanley Skridla fade into time’s indifference. Fast forward fifty years. Eccentric entrepreneur Michael Arians moves to Oregon, opens a roadhouse, gets elected mayor, and becomes obsessed with the crime. He comes up with a scandalous conspiracy theory and starts to believe that Mary Jane’s ghost is haunting his establishment. He also reaches out to the Chicago Tribune for help. Arians’s letter falls on the desk of general assignment reporter Ted Gregory. For the next thirteen years, while he ricochets from story to story and his newspaper is deconstructed around him, Gregory remains beguiled by the case of the teenaged telephone operator Mary Jane and twenty-eight-year-old Navy vet Stanley—and equally fascinated by Arians’s seemingly hopeless pursuit of whoever murdered them. Mary Jane’s Ghost is the story of these two odysseys.

As Mary Jane gave Stormy clues about her disappearance and death, Stormy tried to convince her parents that her visions were real. To get the notion out of her head, Stormy's parents made some inquiries from the information Stormy revealed to them, and discovered information about a missing girl named Mary Jane. Eventually, the police reopened the cold case and investigated the disappearance of Mary Jane. Mary Jane revealed in one of Stormy's visions that she is Stormy's sister. Eventually, Stormy, working with the FBI, discovered the identification of Mary Jane's killer and led the police and the FBI to her body. Through Stormy's visions, the police were then able to capture Mary Jane's killer. In another vision, Mary Janes told Stormy that she would have a sister. Stormy knew her mother would have another child and insisted she is named Mary Elizabeth. After the birth of Mary Elizabeth, Stormy ceased having further visions of Mary Jane.

WHOEVER SAID THAT GHOSTS EXIST MUST BE OUT OF THEIR MIND.Oh, wait. That was me. I said that. If you'd told me yesterday that ghosts were real I would have smiled, nodded, and called a shrink to fix your deluded little mind. But sadly, my ghost friend is lacking something besides his body. His memory. He doesn't know how he died but suspects foul play and he wants my help to find his killer. I can't refuse, I'm a sucker for a good mystery and the chance to bring my friends killer to justice is too good to pass up.Surprises abound as I discover a secret talent for sleuthing, not to mention an unexpected inheritance of a talking cat among other things. But the biggest problem of all? Captain Cowboy Hot Pants, or as he likes to be called, Detective Kade Galloway of the Firefly Bay PD. He's one smokin' cop, but my distrust of the police runs deep and despite his assurances that he's here to help can I really trust him, or is his offer of assistance designed to keep me from discovering the truth?I guess I'll find out when death comes knocking on my door.Join Audrey Fitzgerald in the Ghost Detective series, a paranormal cozy mystery featuring a cat, a ghost, and a murder to solve.

“A haunted, haunting examination of mental illness and murder in a more or less ordinary American city…Mature and thoughtful…A Helter Skelter for our time, though without a hint of sensationalism—unsettling in the extreme but written with confidence and deep empathy” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review). On March 11, 2003, in Brownsville, Texas—one of America’s poorest cities—John Allen Rubio and Angela Camacho murdered their three young children. The apartment building in which the brutal crimes took place was already run down, and in their aftermath a consensus developed in the community that it should be destroyed. In 2008, journalist Laura Tillman covered the story for The Brownsville Herald. The questions it raised haunted her and set her on a six-year inquiry into the larger significance of such acts, ones so difficult to imagine or explain that their perpetrators are often dismissed as monsters alien to humanity. Tillman spoke with the lawyers who tried the case, the family’s neighbors and relatives and teachers, even one of the murderers: John Allen Rubio himself, whom she corresponded with for years and ultimately met in person. Her investigation is “a dogged attempt to understand what happened, a review of the psychological, sociological and spiritual explanations for the crime…a meditation on the death penalty and on the city of Brownsville” Star Tribune (Minneapolis). The result is a brilliant exploration of some of our age’s most important social issues and a beautiful, profound meditation on the truly human forces that drive them. “This thought-provoking…book exemplifies provocative long-form journalism that does not settle for easy answers” (Publishers Weekly, starred review).
