Are commonly confused and some people seem quite incapable of distinguishing between them. The two words are from the same root, L. Facere, to make. But very different in meaning. Effect means to bring about or accomplish something. Affect means to act upon or change Thus: The order did not effect the purpose intended, although it did seriously affect the interests of many people. The keeper's unreasonable tales of the vorticity of the beasts under his care, led us seriously to question his veracity. (stupid or careless stenographers often confuse these two words, although they are entirely different, except in form.) See other similar words on pages 147-149 of the text.
