The United States Navy's guide to bugling remains a useful text for aspiring players of the instrument, and for musicians considering naval service - this edition includes every illustration and piece of musical notation. Bugles have been an important feature in military tradition for centuries: on the battlefield as a method of signalling a charge or withdrawal; in the training of soldiers in sounding the times in barracks; and as a ceremonial instrument during military parades, celebrations, funerals and other such events. It was the Navy's hope that many Americans - enlisted or otherwise - would learn the bugle through this guidebook. Over 150 musical notations are printed in this book. Generally speaking, they become more advanced in terms of phrasing and notation as the reader proceeds through the pages. The program lays out a time frame upon which the player should advance his abilities and teaches the basics of musical theory such as the staves, reading notation, and the timing of play.

Bugles have been an important feature in military tradition for centuries: on the battlefield as a method of signalling a charge or withdrawal; in the training of soldiers in sounding the times in barracks; and as a ceremonial instrument during military parades, celebrations, funerals and other such events. Learning the basics of the instrument is relatively straightforward, and it was the Navy's hope that many Americans - enlisted or otherwise - would learn the bugle through this guidebook. The book's later portions lays out a sequence of notation; beginning with simple phrases, until eventually we progress to popular calls signifying a variety of military practices. First produced by the United States Navy in 1919, this text was subject to a review and editing by naval personnel in the early 1950s. Although quite short, the guidance is efficient, terse and easy to grasp. Over decades, many naval personnel have referred to this manual and enjoyed success in learning how to play the bugle.

The collective voice of Japanese Americans defined by a specific moment in time: the four years of World War II during which the US government expelled resident aliens and its own citizens from their homes and imprisoned 125,000 of them in American concentration camps, based solely upon the race they shared with a wartime enemy. A Penguin Classic This anthology presents a new vision that recovers and reframes the literature produced by the people targeted by the actions of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Congress to deny Americans of Japanese ancestry any individual hearings or other due process after the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor. From nearly seventy selections of fiction, poetry, essays, memoirs, and letters emerges a shared story of the struggle to retain personal integrity in the face of increasing dehumanization – all anchored by the key government documents that incite the action. The selections favor the pointed over the poignant, and the unknown over the familiar, with several new translations among previously unseen works that have been long overlooked on the shelf, buried in the archives, or languished unread in the Japanese language. The writings are presented chronologically so that readers can trace the continuum of events as the incarcerees experienced it. The contributors span incarcerees, their children born in or soon after the camps, and their descendants who reflect on the long-term consequences of mass incarceration for themselves and the nation. Many of the voices are those of protest. Some are those of accommodation. All are authentic. Together they form an epic narrative with a singular vision of America’s past, one with disturbing resonances with the American present.

The Bugle has played a prominent part in all the great wars of history. Its martial notes have been heard in battle, and in the thick of the fray the Buglers have stood ready to sound the “Charge” or “Recall.” In Revolutionary times the Bugles sounded the “Spirit of ’76” and many a drummer boy and Bugler marched with Washington’s “Minute Men.” The Civil war saw Buglers wearing both the Blue and the Gray, and a visit to any large museum will show us the bugles they used. Not so very different in appearance from the ones used today, but not by any means as easy to blow as our modern ones. Colonel Roosevelt’s “Rough Riders” had Buglers attached to them, and a Bugle sounded the “Charge” at San Juan Hill. In the recent Great War, and along the Mexican border today, the Bugle plays its part. Ready at the command to blow “Boots and Saddles” and at the close of the day, to sound “Taps.” “Young America” today is rapidly taking the Bugle for its own, and this movement is not by any means confined to the Boy Scouts. Boys of all ages, from 6 to 60 are interested in learning the Bugle, and are finding in its simplicity an easy step to the Cornet, Trombone and other brass instruments. By carefully reading this book, and applying its principles, you can readily understand how to play the Bugle in “5 Minutes.”
