Excerpt from Manipulation of the Microscope The demand for this book having considerably exceeded the expectations of its author, and the comments on its utility having been so favorable leads to the view that it fills a gap in microscopi cal literature. In preparing for a new edition an opportunity has been given for enlarging on some of the subjects and rewriting others, so as to make them conform to the changes which the last five years have brought about in the construction of apparatus. Excerpt from Use and Care of the Microscope: Extracts From Manipulation of the Microscope How to Set Up the Instrument. Draw the instrument from the case by grasping the base and pillar; free from dust with a large camel's hair brush, I inch or I 1-2 inch, or by wiping carefully with chamois skin, or old linen. Place the instrument on the worktable, which should be of such height that observations can be made with the utmost possible comfort without straining the neck, or compressing the chest. Bear in mind always to sit as upright as possible. If the instrument is used in the upright position, place the base close to the edge of the table; if inclined, it may set farther in. Rest the arms, as much as the height of the instrument will permit, upon the table. Bring the tube to the standard length for which the objectives are corrected. To do this grasp the milled edge of the draw-tube and give it a spiral motion while holding the main tube with the other hand. Excerpt from How to Work With the Microscope The main object of this work is to instruct learners in micro scopical manipulation, and in the performance of those operations which are essential to the successful demonstration of form, structure, colour, and movement under the microscope. To manipulate well requires mental application and power, as well as practice. An indis position to master practical elementary details before proceeding to perform experiments and make Observations is almost universal among students. And yet it is only by being thoroughly grounded in first principles, and well practised in mechanical operations, that any one can hope to achieve real success in the higher branches of scientific enquiry, or to detect the fallacy of certain so-called Observations and experiments, by which those skilled in conjecture seek to bolster up their arbit. Excerpt from The Amateur Microscopist, or Views of the Microscopic World: A Handbook of Microscopic Manipulation and Microscopic Objects But the wondrous scenes thus revealed to the eye have hitherto been mostly confined to this favored class; they have indeed faithfully delineated the curious living and extinct forms, and the beautiful configurations which have met their view, and have likewise fully recorded the observations they have made upon these interesting objects, but the productions of their pencil have for the most part been enshrined in rare and costly volumes, and they have seldom spoken but in the dignified language of science. Thus it has happened, that of the many eager and inquiring minds, which love to expatiate in the fields of Nature, a few only have enjoyed the privilege of exploring the inner labyrinths of creation, and of gathering from thence new treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
