In its preparation many difficulties were encountered, not least of which was the seeming indifference to the necessity of such a work on the part of some intelligent people, from whom I had a reasonable right to expect otherwise. While the primary object has been to afford the business community a reliable, up-to-date Directory, yet, had the advertising patronage extended me by Durham's business men been sufficient to justify the expense, I would have gone more fully into details concerning our educational, religious and industrial life, and have made the illustrations more numerous and elaborate. I trust, however, that, not withstanding these necessary curtailments, it will prove useful to my patrons and of some benefit to the community. The portraits, some of which are calculated to revive pleasant memories of Auld Lang Syne, should interest the older citizens who have within the last twenty-five years witnessed the transformation of Durham, the little hamlet, into Durham, the foremost manufacturing city in the State. These portraits, like old wine, will grow more precious as the years roll by and the features of the old pioneers in Durham's birth and development become dimmed to mem ory's vision. All honor to these men. They builded better than they knew. To those who have kindly patronized and encouraged me in this enterprise, I make my obeisance and extend my heartiest thanks.
