This is one of the rare books on business management. It consolidates all the material in one book that matches the present requirement. Competent managers, if they know any one thing, know how to manage paradox. This is the powerful message of this book. Paradox confuses everyone because many events keep occurring unexpectedly. Although the paradox is Fifth Generation Management according to Charles Handy, a study of paradox-based management in university curriculum is not evident as yet, except a case cited in this book. Readers will find the relevance of paradox from start to end of the book as a special and unique feature worth learning and practising. This book has highlighted the problems presently faced by organizations, managers, leaders and students. Towards the right solution, a collection of pearls of wisdom acquired from the ancient and present way of modern management have been discussed and applied. A concept starting from management foundation to successful management and ultimately to RESPONSIBLE management has been deliberated. Then a trilogy model of science, spirituality and responsible management has been presented. Such a perspective can promote intellectual, emotional and spiritual capabilities to manage diversity at workplace and guarantee business growth. Future indications are provided with a positive note for the young generation with India’s vision and priorities considering its core competencies and resources.

Lean Manufacturing concept has brought new industrial revolution and the battle lines are clearly drawn. It is traditional mass production versus the trim and tidy lean Enterprising. Lean experts and past researchers plead; Lean production is a superior way for humans to make things. It provides better products in wider variety at lower cost. It provides more challenging and fulfilling work for employees at every level. The whole world should adopt lean production, and as quickly as possible. Henry Ford defined Lean Enterprising stating, “If it does not add value, it is waste”. This concept was later adopted by Toyota as the core idea behind the famous Toyota Production System (T.P.S). The Toyota Production System is the foundation of many books on “lean”. It is the story of Lean Production how Japan’s secret weapons in the global auto wars later revolutionized western industries. The concept of lean manufacturing was widely accepted. A Standard S.A.E J 4000:1999 was also released to specify Lean in detail. The purpose of this book is to share the knowledge and experience gained through collaborative contribution - with a wide range of readers including; students, managers, entrepreneurs, industrial leaders, university professors, and self-learning professionals. Implementation of lean practices mainly in automobile and engineering industries provide valuable insight. Further, the book describes how it can be applied to wider field of work including; shipbuilding, information technology, environmental protection, transportation services and performance management from human resource perspective. My presentations on LEAN in conferences and published papers in international journals like; Elsevier, IEEE, and David Publishing-USA are also included to provide valuable inputs. This book recommends the solution for immediate problems faced by industries and service sectors using lean principles and practices. The generic but common and critical problems that are discussed in depth include; economic crisis, global competition, scarce resources, quality issues, waste generation, volatile market, global warming, and poor performance. These issues have also been examined by the author in his other book, “Management Paradox: Re-examined” as source of tension, dilemma and contradiction. Relevant tools and techniques that are addressed and applied include; Kaizen, Five ‘S’, Visual Management, Just in Time, Kanban System, One Piece Flow, Single Minute Exchange of Die, Total Productive Maintenance and Poka Yoke. For a specific reason mistake-proofing (Poka Yoke) has been elaborated in detail for exploring its effectiveness to add value in product and services. This powerful lean tool took a long time to acquire its place in the list of popular tools because it challenged the effectiveness of statistical process control towards achieving zero-defect. The quantitative and qualitative approaches that have been selected and used based on the field of work and situation will be found interesting by research scholars. Methods like correlation analysis, test of hypothesis, and analysis of variance (ANOVA) have been carried out using the quantitative technique. Qualitative approach has been used for lean and sustainable transport system to understand people’s belief, perspective and experience. This approach supported in handling the important issues of consent and confidentiality. The book also presents the arguments on potential limitations of the lean manufacturing strategy on one hand and criticism on drifting definition of lean on other hand. The book firmly suggests instant applicability of lean principles and practices in sectors like manufacturing and construction. The way to apply lean in other sectors including ICT in conjunction with present practices like; agile for knowledge to apply tools, scrum for experience-based self-direction etc. are recommended. These sector- specific practices are supported by lean principles but the book discovers that exclusively focusing on software development without considering upstream and downstream operations severely limit the benefits. Therefore lean principles support agile and scrum and take much beyond software development. The ideas and recommendations offered in this book can be used for further implementation of lean in a large number of organizations and different fields including MSME, service-providing industries, healthcare, construction management, management education, and for army reforms. A leaner, modern military is the need of the hour.

The International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management is sponsored by the Chinese Industrial Engineering Institution, CMES, which is the only national-level academic society for Industrial Engineering. The conference is held annually as the major event in this arena. Being the largest and the most authoritative international academic conference held in China, it provides an academic platform for experts and entrepreneurs in the areas of international industrial engineering and management to exchange their research findings. Many experts in various fields from China and around the world gather together at the conference to review, exchange, summarize and promote their achievements in the fields of industrial engineering and engineering management. For example, some experts pay special attention to the current state of the application of related techniques in China as well as their future prospects, such as green product design, quality control and management, supply chain and logistics management to address the need for, amongst other things low-carbon, energy-saving and emission-reduction. They also offer opinions on the outlook for the development of related techniques. The proceedings offers impressive methods and concrete applications for experts from colleges and universities, research institutions and enterprises who are engaged in theoretical research into industrial engineering and engineering management and its applications. As all the papers are of great value from both an academic and a practical point of view, they also provide research data for international scholars who are investigating Chinese style enterprises and engineering management.

In the midst of the most severe recession for 80 years there is little need to argue that organizations are beset by dilemmas and paradoxes. Confidence in prevailing business models and in the underlying assumptions underpinning business decisions over many decades has now been shaken. But it is not enough to rail against arrogance and greed. Within their own (flawed) assumptions bankers and corporate leaders were acting rationally. A major reason for the failure to anticipate and warn is that observers of organizations usually tend to view organizations in terms similar to those employed by the people who run them: as rational, sensible and objective, whereas, in fact, they are usually confused and confusing, paradoxical and contradictory entities. Paradox is at the heart of how organizations work (or don’t work) yet the phenomenon has been strangely unstudied. In an age of crisis and uncertainty, dilemmas and paradoxes are especially evident and prevalent. The fascination and the promise of paradox is that there is also a sense that there is a hidden truth entwined within the opposites. This we contend is a challenge for leaders. The ultimate responsibility of leadership is to make sense of these and to handle them in a competent manner. This demands a new mode of leadership. The management of dilemma and paradox it is contended, the essence of leadership today. Paradoxical forces provide a dynamism which, although often experienced as potentially threatening, discomforting and negative can also be exciting, promising and positive. "The assumption that organizations are rational entities is challenged every day in the work environment by a rich reality of asymmetries between conflicting forces, complexity, hidden intentions and paradoxes. Anyone wanting to understand the real forces that govern organizations should read this book. A must read for modern leaders who have the intellectual honesty to lead organisations with open eyes and not with the over simplifications and clichés of the past"--Giovanni Ghisetti, Director Business Transformation, Coca Cola Enterprises Europe "Storey and Salaman’s description of the paradoxes which characterise leadership today is hauntingly accurate. Their intelligent optimism that those dilemmas can be met is as encouraging as it is challenging for those of us who have to do just that. Having read the insights in this book I now understand how their business advice was always so pertinent".--Andy Street, Managing Director of John Lewis

The coming together of two longtime national champions in the electrotechnical industry, Sweden's ASEA and Switzerland's Brown Boveri, marked the birth of a company with truly global aspirations, one whose apparent genius for combining strong central planning with local autonomy for its plants has made it a trendsetter. An international team of researchers assesses the dynamic interplay of the forces of convergence and diversity present in ABB. Together they examine the actual workings of this multinational—in order to learn to what degree the corporate strategies are achieved in its plants. Based on a multilevel organizational study, their book compares seven plants in six countries on three continents.
