The catheter should be kept immersed in a solution of one part formalin to 200 parts water. A pint jar full of the solution may be kept for the purpose. After use the catheter should be thoroughly washcd, then placed in the jar, and the top screwed tight, till again needed for use. If formalin is not obtainable, strong, hot soapsuds may be successfully used. The water should be saturated with soap, and at a temperature near the boiling point. The catheter should be left in this solution for ten minutes before using. Before introducing the catheter, the hands and the genitals should be thoroughly washed with warm, strong soapsuds. The catheter should be passed very gently, care being takento avoid undue pressure or violence of any sort. The improper use of the catheter often gives rise to inflammation of the urethra, to acute cystitis, and chronic catarrh of the bladder, which greatly aggravates the difficulties which arise from enlargement of the prostate. Men in the Public Eye reveals why men's domination in and of the public sphere is a vital feature of gender relations in patriarchy. It also shows how public domains dominate private domains, contributing to the intensification of public patriarchies. Jeff Hearn explores these important issues by focusing on the period 1870-1920, when there was massive growth and transformation in the power of the public domains. He demonstrates that these historical debates and dilemmas are still relevant today as men search for new, postmodern forms of masculinities.
