Mr. Whitefield has recently died, and his will indicates that his daughter Ann should be left in the care of two men, Roebuck Ramsden and Jack Tanner. Ramsden, a venerable old man, distrusts John Tanner, an eloquent youth with revolutionary ideas, saying "He is prodigiously fluent of speech, restless, excitable (mark the snorting nostril and the restless blue eye, just the thirty-secondth of an inch too wide open), possibly a little mad". In spite of what Ramsden says, Ann accepts Tanner as her guardian, though Tanner doesn't want the position at all. She also challenges Tanner's revolutionary beliefs with her own ideas. Despite Tanner's professed dedication to anarchy, he is unable to disarm Ann's charm, and she ultimately persuades him to marry her, choosing him over her more persistent suitor, a young man named Octavius Robinson.

Man and Superman was the first drama to be broadcast on the BBC's Third Programme on October 1, 1946. To celebrate Radio 3's 50th anniversary, the play was directed by Sir Peter Hall, and preserved for all time in this lush audio dramatization. 'A comedy and a philosophy', Man and Superman is based on the Don Juan theme, and using all the elements from Mozart's Don Giovanni, Shaw reordered them so that Don Juan becomes the quarry instead of the huntsman. Boasting an outstanding cast including Ralph Fiennes, Juliet Stevenson, Dame Judi Dench, John Wood, Nicholas Le Prevost, and Paul Merton, this release includes an exclusive interview with director Sir Peter Hall.

Man and Superman: A Comedy and a Philosophy by Bernard Shaw Man and Superman is a massive drama filled with light comedy and deep philosophy, based on Nietzsche's theory of the Abermensch or superman. Acts I, II, and IV play like a romantic comedy with a bite. Ann Whitefield relentlessly pursues dedicated bachelor Jack Tanner, not giving up until he agrees to marry her. Nobody likes Ann, least of all Tanner; she's a selfish bully. But, she is imbued with the Life Force, which makes her charmingly irresistible. By contrast, the third act of the play takes place in hell and the main characters take on the roles of Mozart's Don Giovanni. There, they engage in a long philosophical discussion about the eternal conflicts between men and women and heaven and hell. This third act provides a philosophical context within which to understand the other three acts, giving the comedy and romance of Acts I, II, and IV a deeper meaning. In execution, however, Act III is almost always removed. The third act has also been performed separately, as a single act titled Don Juan in Hell.
