Let's be candid. The Stars are aligned against STEM (Science-Technology-Engineering-Math) careers. The Stars of academia, that is. Public opinion is out of synch too. Math and other STEM topics don't get enough respect. It's subtle. They are in the orbit of educational thinking but eclipsed by one of many celestial bodies of knowledge. The K through 12 educational process frameworks promotes the College quest. Some aspire to an Engineering or Science program. All's right with the world. Not really. Engineering and Science in College require a certain foundation Math in High School. These courses are available. However, since there are plenty of specific career paths to imagine, then few choose STEM preparation. Not taking the proper courses decreases the number of students capable of engaging in STEM studies beyond the 12th grade. As a result, their educational template for grasping technical topics has not been developed. Time and energy have been expended and can't be instantaneously reversed. They just can't flip a switch. A certain amount of effort is required to build a STEM foundation. With respect to Math, they may need to start further back than where they left off. Meantime, they have graduated. Closure! ... For future generations the process can be changed. Simply stated, if the Mathematics is off-track, STEM careers are thwarted. Follow the Math and the structural decay becomes evident. Why is STEM preparation, a problem? What can be done to fix it?

Stem Cells: An Insider's Guide is an exciting new book that takes readers inside the world of stem cells guided by international stem cell expert, Dr. Paul Knoepfler. Stem cells are catalyzing a revolution in medicine. The book also tackles the exciting and hotly debated area of stem cell treatments that are capturing the public's imagination. In the future they may also transform how we age and reproduce. However, there are serious risks and ethical challenges, too. The author's goal with this insider's guide is to give readers the information needed to distinguish between the ubiquitous hype and legitimate hope found throughout the stem cell world. The book answers the most common questions that people have about stem cells. Can stem cells help my family with a serious medical problem such as Alzheimer's, Multiple Sclerosis, or Autism? Are such treatments safe? Can stem cells make me look younger or even literally stay physically young? These questions and many more are answered here.A number of ethical issues related to stem cells that spark debates are discussed, including risky treatments, cloning and embryonic stem cells. The author breaks new ground in a number of ways such as by suggesting reforms to the FDA, providing a new theory of aging based on stem cells, and including a revolutionary Stem Cell Patient Bill of Rights. More generally, the book is your guide to where the stem cell field will be in the near future as well as a thoughtful perspective on how stem cell therapies will ultimately change your life and our world.

Here is one of the great untold tales of American enterprise, recounted entirely through the stories of the human beings who thought up, mapped out, poured, paved - and tried to stop - the Interstates. Conceived and spearheaded by Thomas "the Chief" MacDonald, the iron-willed bureaucrat from the muddy farmlands of Iowa who rose to unrivaled power, the highway system was propelled forward through the pathbreaking efforts of brilliant engineers, argued over by politicians of every ideological and moral stripe, reviled by the citizens whose lives it devastated, and lauded as the greatest public works project in U.S. history.
