Excerpt from Numismatics of Massachusetts It will be noted that I have made no attempt to subdivide the pieces into store cards, hard-times tokens, medals, etc., as do most numismatists, which only leads to endless confusion; but have grouped everything, except the personal medals, un der the respective towns or cities, in the first place alphabeti cally and then, in the case of the dated pieces, chronologically. This system seems to be more suitable to a catalogue not compiled primarily for experts. A full index will guide those who consult the list. Excerpt from Guide to the Numismatic Collection of the Mint of the United States at Philadelphia, Pa Sir: The need has long been felt of a small descri tive guide book which could be sold to visitors to the Numismatic ollection in the Philadelphia Mint. A year ago a complete catalogue of the collec tion, a book of 600 pages, was published, which sells at $1, and public interest in it has justlfied the publication. This, however, does not fully satisfy the want. There are thousands of visitors annually who would be served and instructed by a small pamphlet that might be sold for much less than the price of the catalogue, and the usefulness of the collection would be greatly enhanced thereby. The cop for such a pamphlet has been pre ared by the curator, Mr. T. L. Gom parette, an is now submltte with the recommendation that an edition be printed and offered for sale at the Mint and through the Superintendent of Documents at Washington. Excerpt from The Coins of India A detailed description will be found opposite each of the plates, giving transliterations and translations of the coin legends; and these, with the list of selected authorities at the end of the book, should provide the key to a fuller knowledge of the subject. To almost all the works mentioned in the latter the writer is indebted, although it has been impossible to acknowledge all obli gations in detail. Mention must also be made of Dr. George Macdonald's fascinating little study, T/ze Evolu tion of Coz'noge (the Cambridge Manuals of Science and Literature), as well as of the late Dr. Vincent Smith's Oxford History of India, which has in general been accepted as the authority for the historical facts and dates, somewhat plentifully incorporated throughout the book.
