Excerpt from List of Sires Proved in Dairy Herd Improvement Associations, 1938 In dairy herd-improvement association work a sire is termed a proved sire when the production records of at least five of his unselected daughters have been compared with the production records of their dams. Such comparisons may show that a s1re has transmitted high medium or low-producing ability to his daughters. To say that a sire is a proved s1re, therefore, does not necessarily mean that the sire is a valuable sire; it merely means that the production records of five or more of his unselected daughters and their dams have been compared on a uniform basis. Excerpt from List of Sires Proved in Dairy-Herd Improvement Associations, 1949 Although many of the sires listed were dead when proved, they may have living sons available for breeding pur110ses. Information concerning sons of proved sires can be obtained from the State ex tension dairyman in charge of dairy-herd-improvement-association work in the State in which the sire was proved. The identification numbers of all recorded sons are included in the proved-sire record on file in each State office. It has been demonstrated that. Sons of good proved sires, that is, sires that have transmitted high-producing capac ity to a large percentage of their daughters, can be used with greater assurance of success than sons of sires that have not been proved.
