Our eternal well-being, our happiness for both worlds, is wrapped up in religion. And the religion we are seeking is not a mere name; it is not a mere opinion; it is not simply the putting on of an appearance of holiness. It is a living principle; it is Jesus living and reigning in the heart; it is Heaven shining in the soul; it is the image of Divinity stamped on humanity; it is likeness to Christ in His spirit and temper and conduct; it is following God as a dear child; it is being led by the Spirit; it is thinking, and talking, and working to uplift and bless a fallen world. The Apostles taught that religion was obedience, love, goodness, benevolence, right living, a yearning after the Infinite, and a fervent desire for the salvation of the human race. They taught that it consisted in a loving heart and a loving life, --in a soul / full of holy dispositions and a life full of holy deeds, --in being good and doing good, --in living righteously and promoting righteousness. Nothing short of this can satisfy our mind. We wish to be one of Christ's true friends, a disciple indeed, always ready for His appearing and His kingdom. 3. They are not ashamed to confess Christ.
