Money was so scarce that nearly all their dealings were carried On by barter. The prosperity of Salisbury was short-lived. Soon after the completion of the court-house, a treaty was made with the Indians by which a strip of land twelve miles wide was thrown Open for settlement on the west, and when the state of Indi ana was Organized, Centreville, a little hamlet just built, four miles away, succeeded in wresting the seat of justice from the older town. Salisbury began to decline; the buildings were taken down; some of them were moved to Richmond, and in 1826 the abandoned county seat contained only ten families. It was in this little hamlet in its declining days that the great Senator and War Governor Of Indiana was born.
