Lauren, a young successful golfer was never privy to her mother's childhood, nor did she care to be. Uprooted from her beloved Ohio home at age eleven and forced to move out west, to a place where being Mormon seemed to mean everything, everything her family wasn't. Kay struggles to survive bullying and abuse all while living as a foreigner in Utah. Kay does everything she can to keep her past in the past. She rains the adoration she longed for as a child onto her daughter, while doing her best to give Lauren a life she was unable to have. But no matter the reassuring love, Lauren resents her mother for repeatedly moving them. She feels there's no excuse for a childhood full of new beginnings. Now Kay is fighting what seems to be a losing battle against a corporation that protects a man hell-bent on hurting her. She is backed into a corner where her long-lived daydreams and reoccurring nightmares are forced to resurface. As the full view of her mother's life unfolds before her, Lauren struggles to process her emotions, and come to terms with the truth hidden behind her own motivations.

A timely, nuanced work that dissects the thorny debate around cultural appropriation and the literary imagination. How do we properly define cultural appropriation, and is it always wrong? If we can write in the voice of another, should we? And if so, what questions do we need to consider first? In Appropriate, creative writing professor Paisley Rekdal addresses a young writer to delineate how the idea of cultural appropriation has evolved—and perhaps calcified—in our political climate. What follows is a penetrating exploration of fluctuating literary power and authorial privilege, about whiteness and what we really mean by the term empathy, that examines writers from William Styron to Peter Ho Davies to Jeanine Cummins. Lucid, reflective, and astute, Appropriate presents a generous new framework for one of the most controversial subjects in contemporary literature.

The Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument is the location of one of the best-known terrestrial records for the late Cretaceous. Prior fieldwork confirmed the richness of the area, but a major effort begun in the new century has documented over 2,000 new vertebrate fossil sites, provided new radiometric dates, and identified five new genera of ceratopsids, two new species of hadrosaur, a probable new genus of hypsilophodontid, new pachycephalosaurs and ankylosaurs, several kinds of theropods (including a new genus of oviraptor and a new tyrannosaur), plus the most complete specimen of a Late Cretaceous therizinosaur ever collected from North America, and much more. The research documented in this book is rewriting our understanding of Late Cretaceous paleobiogeography and dinosaur phyletics. At the Top of the Grand Staircase: The Late Cretaceous of Southern Utah is a major stepping stone toward a total synthesis of the ecology and evolution of the Late Cretaceous ecosystems of western North America.
