This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1839 edition. Excerpt: ... 138 LECTURE VI. 2 Kings vi. 17. "AND EL1SHA PRAYED, AND SAID, LORD, I PRAY THEE, OPEN HIS EYES, THAT HE MAY SEE. AND THE LORD OPENED THE EYES OF THE YOUNG MAN; AND HK SAW, AND, BEHOLD, THE MOUNTAIN WAS FULL OF HORSES AND CHARIOTS OF FIRE ROUND ABOUT ELISHA." In the last incident that formed a portion of the history we are reviewing, we were led, by the astonishing power vouchsafed to Elisha, to dwell upon that most wonderful attribute of the Almighty which it so strikingly illustrated--the omnipresence of God. The narrative which is this day to occupy our attention, will convey to our minds an equally convincing evidence of another attribute of the great Jehovah, in which we are, as individuals, as deeply and feelingly interested--the omniscience of the Almighty. May the conviction of this great truth take full possession of our minds, that remembering that " all things are naked, and opened unto the eyes of Him with whom we have to do,"1 we may learn to live, and speak, and think, as continually within the ken of His all-seeing eye, and the hearing of His all-hearing ear. Commencing with the eighth verse of the sixth chapter, we read, "Then the king of Syria warred against Israel, and took counsel with his servants, saying, In such and such a place shall be my camp. And the man of God sent unto the king of Israel, saying, Beware that thou pass not such a place; for thither the Syrians are come down. And the king of Israel sent to the place which the man of God told him and warned him of, and saved himself there, not once 1 Heb. iv. 13. or twice. Therefore the heart of the king of Syria was sore troubled for this thing; and he called his servants, and said unto them, Will ye not shew me which of us is for the king of Israel? And one of...

“This book, which now appears in a revised form, does not lay claim to be either a Critical or a Historical Commentary, but is intended to follow the Scriptural account of the Life and Work of the Prophet Elisha with the view of pointing out their moral, and learning their lessons, as applicable to all times, and especially to our own. This will explain the absence of exegetical notes, and of all discussion of the points which have been raised, more particularly in connection with this portion of the Old Testament.” —From the Preface

In no character of the Bible, perhaps, is the life of Jesus, the SON of God, so perfectly mirrored as in Elisha, the MAN of God. His gentleness of spirit and holiness of life; the patience and faithfulness which must have characterized his teaching; and, above all, the marvelous and beneficent character of his miraculous deeds; were a prophecy in actual life of him who spake as never man spake, "who went about doing good"; and whose miracles proclaimed him to be "the Son of God with power." The desire to direct the attention of students of the word of God with deeper interest to the beautiful and Christ-like character of the son of Shaphat, and thus incite to greater holiness of life, a more perfect consecration to the service of God, has led to the preparation of these chapters... Excerpt from Elisha the Man of God In no character of the Bible, perhaps, is the life of Jesus, the SON of God, so perfectly mirrored as in Elisha, the Man of God. His gentleness of spirit and holiness of life; the patience and faithfulness which must have characterized his teaching; and, above all, the marvelous and beneficent character of his miraculous deeds; were a prophecy in actual life of him who spake as never man spake, "who went about doing good"; and whose miracles proclaimed him to be "the Son of God with power." The desire to direct the attention of students of the word of God with deeper interest to the beautiful and Christ-like character of the son of Shaphat, and thus incite to greater holiness of life, a more perfect consecration to the service of God, has led to the preparation of these chapters. The aim has been to make due acknowledgment, in the proper place, of authors and works quoted from. It seems proper however, that special mention should be made of the History of Elisha, by Dr. Krummacher; Lectures on History of Elisha, by Rev. Henry Blunt; The Prophet Elisha, by John M. Lowrie, D. D.; Elisha the Prophet, by Alfred Edersheim, D. D.; the Pulpit Commentary; and Lange's Commentary. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
