This acclaimed biography shines a light on a trailblazing woman who created a classic movie monster—and the author’s quest to rescue her from obscurity. As a teenager, Mallory O’Meara was thrilled to discover that one of her favorite movies, Creature from the Black Lagoon, featured a monster designed by a woman, Milicent Patrick. But while Patrick should have been hailed as a pioneer in the genre, there was little information available about her. As O’Meara discovered, Patrick’s contribution had been claimed by a jealous male colleague and her career had been cut short. No one even knew if she was still alive. As a young woman working in the horror film industry, O’Meara set out to right the wrong, and in the process discovered the full, fascinating story of an ambitious, artistic woman ahead of her time. Patrick’s contribution to special effects proved to be just the latest chapter in a remarkable, unconventional life, from her youth growing up in the shadow of Hearst Castle, to her career as one of Disney’s first female animators. And at last, O’Meara discovered what really had happened to Patrick after The Creature’s success, and where she went. A true-life detective story and a celebration of a forgotten feminist trailblazer, Mallory O’Meara’s The Lady from the Black Lagoon establishes Patrick in her rightful place in film history while calling out a Hollywood culture where little has changed since. This book is the story of my life, a lady who grew up on a small farm in the Deep South, and how I was able to reach the top of my career field, serving as a two-star general at the Pentagon. Women have served, both in and out of uniform, in defense of this country since the beginning of our nation. Serving the United States Air Force in uniform was my career choice. This book is an outgrowth of the review of publicity surrounding my military career, both active and reserves, and follow-on civilian career, and of the inventory of the more than 100 speeches I gave when I reached the top of my career field. Audiences in the 1980s and 90s were surprised to learn of the original roadblocks, both laws and policies, which precluded me, a woman, from setting goals at the beginning of my military journey in 1960 to reach the level to which I finally achieved during my career in uniform. All I had when in uniform were male mentors, because there were no females to which I could look for guidance and success stories. Indeed, my accomplishments led to the glass ceiling being opened wide for the other ladies who came after me and were recognized for their ability and talents to serve and excel at higher levels of leadership. Friends who know of my accomplishments implored me to put pen to paper to show how I, as a young girl could —with hard work, tenacity, stick-to-it-iveness and using lessons learned in early years —propel myself to the forefront, leading to success. Come with me as I take you back to the beginning, to my first role models: my mother and father who set examples for me and taught me lessons that would propel me even further than a little 1940's farm girl from Oakman, Alabama could have imagined. I hope you'll be inspired to see where my dreams took me, finding love, heartbreak, adventure and prestige along the way.

This volume commences with Q's ghostly 'Lady Mary's Tale' which is based on a traditional story of a headless carriage controlled by a headless driver careering across Dartmoor and accompanied by a wild dog. It appears that Q based his tale on Sabine Baring-Gould's recounting of Lady Mary's life (also included in this volume) but the facts are rather different to the Cornish and Devonian ghostly tale. Now surpassed in fame as a writer by his daughter's best friend, Daphne du Maurier, c Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch was the pre-eminent Cornish writer of Victorian and Edwardian times and founder of the Cambridge University school of English Literature. He is of particular interest since his fiction was very often based on factual events long passed from memory.

“Anna Calhoun Clemson was John C. Calhoun’s favorite child. After reading Ann Russell’s biography based on Anna’s letters, one finds it easy to understand why. The product of a famous family and an exceptional woman, Anna was also, as Russell ably demonstrates, very much “a southern lady.” Her story—her “life’s journey,” as Calhoun told his daughter her life would be–gives us a glimpse of an important southern family, of southern womanhood, of heartbreak and difficulty, of a nation torn apart by sectional conflict. Like Mary Chesnut’s famous diary, Anna’s letters, the crux of Russell’s study, provide us with a rich, detailed picture of southern life, both personal and public.”
