Excerpt from Laboratory Outlines in Physical Chemistry Completion of the work of this course entitles the student to three hours of University credit per term, two of which are given for experiments performed satisfactorily in the laboratory and one for written reports based upon these experiments. The following Laboratory Outlines describe the work to be accomplished during the year, though certain of the experiments may be omitted at the discretion of the Professor in charge. No work of a similar nature done elsewhere at another college or university is required to be repeated, provided the work be submitted to the Professor in charge for his approval. Excerpt from Laboratory Manual of Physical Chemistry In presenting this manual of laboratory exercises in physical chemistry, the authors have been prompted by a threefold object: first, to facilitate the task of the instructor in handling large classes of students beginning a course of practical physical chemistry; second, to assist the student in recording his observations in a clear and comprehensive manner; and third, to present such quantitative exercises as will be particularly desirable in the training of students of engineering. In view of the fact that there are, as a rule, available for laboratory work not more than two and one-half hours at a time, it has been found desirable to have the different pieces of apparatus set up beforehand by the instructor. To this end, each experiment is preceded by an exact list of the apparatus and chemicals needed. It is believed that this will materially aid the instructor in assembling the necessary equipment. At the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, the laboratory course immediately follows the completion of the theoretical course in physical chemistry, and students are thus prepared to take up the study of any experiment herein listed. It is therefore found practical to prepare the equipment for one or two units of each exercise before the laboratory course starts, and to shift the student successively from one experiment to another. In this way, an excessive amount of preparatory work is avoided. Many of the experiments have been in use in their present form at this Institute, and elsewhere, for a number of years, and have been found to be thoroughly satisfactory. Directions have been made as concise as possible. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Laboratory Outline of College Chemistry In the effort to make misapprehensions and mistakes as nearly impossible as may be, the directions have been entirely rewritten, and in many cases have been amplified, and a num ber of the experiments have been modified. An entirely new set of figures has also been drawn. To render the exercises more instructive, and still further to discourage mechanical work, a larger number of questions has been inserted. With the same end in view, data in regard to solubility have been introduced (appendix) as a new feature, and their use in explaining chemical phenomena has been illustrated in many experiments. The rationalizing value of using the conceptions of chemical dynamics, the electromotive series, and the degrees of ioniza tion has been emphasized by more frequent references. Some of the formal quantitative experiments have been modified, and the directions have been made clearer. The value of these experiments has been found to lie chie y in the basis they give for clear understanding of the difficult subject of combining, atomic, and molecular weights. Excerpt from A Laboratory Outline of Elementary Chemistry In preparing this Outline, several things have been kept in view. For example: The selection, the order, and the form of statement have been arranged so as to harmonize with, and suitably to illustrate the subject matter of the Author's text-book of Elementary Chemistry. The apparatus has been made as simple and small in amount as possible. The list of chemicals has also been restricted to the least expensive materials and the smallest number of items. The indispensable experiments which are less simple have been left for the class-room demonstrations. All the experiments, and the wording of the directions, have been tried under the Author's supervision with young pupils, and have been altered until found satisfactory. The lengths of the laboratory periods assigned to chemistry are so different in different institutions, varying from 45 minutes to 90 minutes and even more, that exercises arranged for any one length of period would still be a misfit in the majority of cases. To make adjustment easy, the exercises have been subdivided, so that where the whole exercise would occupy more than 45 minutes, certain parts may be omitted or assigned to the next period. It is not expected that the whole of the work outlined will be done by any one class. A choice is required, so that the interests of the instructor, the sex of the pupils, and other factors may receive consideration. Excerpt from Laboratory Exercises in Physical Chemistry With the growth of a new science between physics and chemistry there has arisen need for a new type of laboratory manual. This need has been met by two books - Ostwald's "Physiko-Chemische Messungen" and Traube's "Physikalisch-Chemische Methode." Notwithstanding the excellence of these books they have not proven themselves practical guides in the laboratory, owing to too great detail and too many references to the literature. With the wish to prepare a manual which may be placed in the hands of the student of physical chemistry, the author has written this book. He would state at the outset that he in no way considers this as an effort to rival either of the above books, which for long must remain the standard works of reference on physico-chemical measurements. The effort has been made to select only such exercises as are typical, and where several different methods exist for the measurement of the same quantity, only in rare instances has more than one been given. In a word, the book has been made as condensed as possible in order not to discourage the student with too many methods. It has been thought advisable to include several exercises which are usually studied in physics, but these may be omitted if the student has already had sufficient practice with them.
